Mangalore, Jan 25: The weeklong National road safety week organized jointly by RTO and Police Department was inaugurated at Carmel High School, Pandeshwar on Tuesday January 25.
 
MAHE former vice chancellor B M Hegde inaugurated the programme by lighting the lamp. In his inaugural address he said that the vehicle users should take a pledge of obeying the traffic rules with self determination. Usage of mobile phones, negligence, unhealthy competition among bus drivers have resulted fatal accidents. Children can be educated on this by organizing workshop on regular basis in schools, he suggested.

SP A Subrahmanyeshwar Rao, the chief guest of the programme speaking on the occasion said that law alone can not control traffic system, cooperation of citizen is more important, he added. Detailing about the 96 accident death cases reported in NH 48 last year, Rao said the department will hold a meeting as to discuss how well police personnel with the help of citizens can curb such incidents. Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh presided over the programme.
 
General Secretary of the DK Bus Owners' Association Aziz Parthipady and senior motor vehicle inspector Keshava Dharani and others were present.
