Davangere, Jan 22: Uma Tippeswamy (26), working as second grade assistant in the taluk panchayat here, was brutally murdered by a youth on Friday January 21 evening. It is learnt that the murderer was angry and frustrated at her rejection of his proposal to marry him.
Ravi (30), Uma’s relative, has been identified as the culprit. As Uma approached her office for work at around 9.20 am, she was hit by Ravi, who was waiting near the office door, with a machete. Uma collapsed on the spot and died due to excessive blood loss.
Ravi thereafter, consumed poison he had brought with him, and attempted suicide. He was admitted into a hospital, where his condition remains critical.
Ravi was in love with Uma, a native of Anaji village near here, since the last three years. He had repeatedly requested her to marry him. Uma had got a job in taluk panchayat on compassionate grounds, after her father, Tippeswamy, died two years back. She had repeatedly turned down Ravi’s marriage proposal, it is gathered.
