Puttur: St.Philomena College organizes orientation programme on student mentoring

Media Release

Puttur, Feb 14: The orientation programme on student mentoring was organized by Mentoring Unit in association with Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) at St Philomena College, Puttur. Dr Malini, professor of Chemistry, was the resource person.

"Students in the college are in their formative years. With young and tender minds, they have a lot of aspirations, dreams, and expectations. They face a lot of emotional stress. If they miss the love and affection, and guidance by parents, they may go out of track. In this context, the mentoring by teachers is essential," said Dr Malini.

"Many students show outward confidence but are drained internally. The expectation from parents, teachers, and society adds fuel to their emotional turmoil. Some students will succumb to this stress and take the ultimate decision of losing their life themselves. At this juncture, the teachers'help is needed. The counseling and motivational words will bring them out of the mental stress," explained Dr Malini with examples.

Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro, the principal of the college, presided the program and said, "Teachers should be the role model to students and society. They have to imbibe good qualities. They have to be patient and humane towards students. They have to listen to the problems and emotions of students. During the counseling they have to be careful by keeping their distance from students. Playing with the emotion is not an easy task."

Professor Prashant Rai rendered the prayer. The coordinator of the mentoring unit of the college, professor Edvin D'Souza, welcomed and Dr Dimple Fernandes proposed a vote of thanks. Professor Nowlin Fernandes compered the programme.
