Panaji: Murderer sentenced to life imprisonment, slapped fine

Panaji, Dec 27: Justice Vincent D’Silva, judge of additional sessions court sentenced a man to life imprisonment and also slapped a fine of Rs one lac for the murder he committed three years ago.

Aman Kavitiya was convicted for the murder of Baptista D’Costa alias Batu, who was brutally killed by the accused three years ago.

Kavitiya slit the throat of Baptista with a sharp knife at Lovers’ beah at Betalbatim in 2018 and hid the weapon used in the crime. He also robbed the gold items the deceased was wearing at the time of murder in addition to cash and two mobiles.

Counsel D M Korgaonkar led the prosecution which examined 28 witnesses. In his verdict, justice D’Silva said that the witness and the circumstances are sufficient to hold the accused guilty of the heinous crime beyond any reasonable doubt.”

The judge also said that the murderer planned the crime two days prior by buying a new knife in order to rob the gold that the deceased was wearing. He also escaped from the spot.
