Mysuru, Nov 11: The Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of St Philomena’s College, Mysuru organized a two-day orientation programme for the newly admitted undergraduate students at the indoor stadium of the college on October 27 and 28, 2021. The major objective of the programme was to make the parents and students aware of the National Education Policy-2020 and its benefits, the rules and regulations of the college and ensuring parental participation in monitoring the performance and progress of the students.
The orientation programme was inaugurated with the lighting of the lamp by the chief guest, professor S N Hegde, former vice chancellor, University of Mysore, Dr Bernard Prakash Barnis, rector/manager of the college and other dignitaries. In his address professor S N Hegde mentioned that the NEP-20 is believed to be a game changer of Indian Education Ecosystem and that it is certainly a good Policy statement and a vision document envisaging radical but progressive changes in the entire gamut of Indian Education System in the next 10-15 years. Highlighting the advantages, he said that the NEP-20 visualizes scholarship, entrepreneurship as well as good citizenship in our fresh graduates.
The programme began with the College Anthem followed by a prayer service for the new academic year, conducted by Fr John Paul. Dr Alphonsus D’souza, the principal of the college welcomed the dignitaries, staff, students and the parents. Ronald Prakash Cutinha, the IQAC co-ordinator briefed the gathering about the inception and growth of the college. He expressed delight over the fact that the college is a global village with students from 19 different states of India and 32 countries of the world. Addressing the mission and goals reflected in the curricula he expressed that the college is continuing its tradition of patronage for moral and ethical concerns and emerging as a leader. Students were taken on a virtual tour of the college to evoke an experience of the campus. Sharing their experiences Mary Angelia Alfred and Vishnu Dev, alumni of the college said that the ambience of the college has always been positive and encouraging and has helped them achieve great heights.
Post lunch, professor Nagaraj Urs, the NEP co-ordinator of the college enlightened the students on the NEP-2020 guidelines. He advised the students to utilize the advantages of the new policy and choose their subjects wisely.
Dr (Lt Col) Prasad S N, deputy director and professor - Strategy and General Management and co-ordinator for Institutional accreditations and approvals, SDMIMD advised the students to be focused on creativity and innovation, develop critical thinking and higher order thinking capacities, problem solving abilities, team-work and communication skills. He motivated them to acquire the skills of in-depth learning and mastery of curricula across field.
An interactive session of students and deans of various departments was held on day two and students were asked to select the discipline specific core papers and open elective papers of their choice.
Vishwas, department Of Physics, William, department Of English, Periya Nayagammal, the physical director, gave necessary information about the opportunities in the field of NCC, NSS and Sports respectively. Britto Dominic Ryan, controller of examinations briefed the students about the examination department and the various certificates issued to the students.
The programme was presided over by Dr Bernard Prakash, rector, St. Philomena’s College. Fr Maria Xavier, vice rector, Sanjay Nair, vice principal, Othbert Pinto, PG director and others were present. A vote of thanks was proposed by Panchama, department of Political Science and the programme was compered by William and Preethi Periera.
