Mangalore: Autorickshaw Drivers Raise Voice against Corruption in RTO

Mangalore, Nov 9: The Dakshina Kannada district committee of Federation of Karnataka Auto Rickshaw Drivers' Union, affiliated to CITU, gathered at the regional transport office (RTO) here on Tuesday November 9 and protested against the improper office practices and corruption in RTO.

The union also threatened to intensify their protest if ‘unscientific’ orders are forced by the state government on autorickshaw drivers.

The protestors' demands included revision of the rule that stipulates educational qualification of minimum eighth standard for auto rickshaw drivers, immediate action against various problems faced by autorickshaw drivers, provision of badges for all the licensed auto drivers, simplification of law pertaining to issue of badges, consent for the certificate given by private MBBS doctors, no harassment while issuing the eligibility certificate for those auto drivers who have gas cylinders, single-window system while dealing with the applications in RTO office and eradication of corruption in RTO office.
 
Karunakara Shreeyan, president of the Union speaking on the occasion said that with the introduction of new rules where auto drivers are forced to get medical certificate only by government hospitals while renewing their licence, the drivers are suppose to pay Rs 250 to Rs 300 which is a huge burden on poor drivers. The condition of auto drivers in rural areas is even more pathetic, he added.
 
Vishwanath Shetty, secretary of the Union led the protest.
 
As many as 70 auto drivers took part in the protest.

    Corruption in RTO, Registrars Office, MCC should not be taken as bad. Nothing will move in these offices if money is not paid. The system is such that if you do not pay your work will not be done. It is really a shame that one has to pay money even for a small work. Gov. has made a system in such a manner that you have to go to them to get your work done.
