Udupi, Oct 26: The department of Ophthalmology Kasturba Medical College Manipal and Kasturba Hospital Manipal in association with OEU Alumni association Manipal held the first MAHE and OEU Alumni Association – Late Prof P N Srinivasa Rao and Late Dr Babu Rajendran Oration Award and hybrid OEU Alumni Meet on October 24.

The oration awardee, Dr Rama Mohan Rao Kalmady, an eminent vitreoretinal surgeon and innovator gave an inspiring lecture on the lessons learnt in his life.

The chief guest of the occasion Lt Gen Dr M D Venkatesh, vice chancellor MAHE stressed on the role played by alumni in furthering the name and fame of MAHE an Institute of Eminence. The guests of honour, Dr PLNG Rao, pro vice chancellor MAHE Manipal and Shaila Rao, Dr Anil Bhat associate dean KMC Manipal, Dr Rohit Singh director Alumni Relations MAHE graced the occasion.

The highlight of the day was a video where friends, family and colleagues reminisced about Dr PN Srinivasa Rao and Dr Babu Rajendran. Dr PNS Rao was the founding head of the department of Ophthalmology at KMC Manipal who introduced and conducted hundreds of surgical eye camps benefitting thousands of poor and needy people of the region. Dr Babu Rajendran was the first post graduate alumnus at OEU Institute of Ophthalmology KMC Manipal, a man known for his integrity, who later went on to become the President of All India Ophthalmological Society.

The programme was conducted under the able leadership of Dr Sulatha Bhandary, professor and HOD, president of the OEU Alumni Association who also gave the overview of the programme. Dr Yogish Kamath professor and HOU, secretary of the Alumni Association read out the oration award citation and also gave the secretary’s report. Dr Neetha KIR associate professor and treasurer of alumni association gave the treasurer’s report. The programme was seamlessly conducted by the MC Dr Manali Hazarika, associate professor.
