Kundapur, Sep 28: Don Bosco Senior Secondary School, under the aegis of the 'Club of Life' from the Psychology department successfully organized 'Suicide Prevention Awareness Week' from September 20 to 25. The students of Psychology of XI Std under the guidance of the School Wellness teacher, Rakshitha N J, conducted a host of activities for the students of 6th to 11th std.
World Suicide Prevention Day is observed every year on September 10 across the world to provide awareness through various activities and to take action towards prevention of suicide. The month of September is considered to be the Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) revealed in 2015 report that, 'One student commits suicide every one hour in India'. Therefore, awareness about prevention of suicide at schools becomes need of the hour.
The organizing team conducted drawing competition for students of grade VI to VIII with the themes that encouraged students to have a positive outlook at their lives. The poster making competition was held for students of grade X and XI with the theme, 'Prevention of Suicide'.
The awareness programme also comprised of information sharing through flyers and posters on school notice boards regarding the statistics of suicide, the risk factors, prevention strategies and source for help. The promotion of mental wellbeing was demonstrated through a skit on the assembly area by the students of grade XI and the members of ‘Club of Life’.
All the students, teachers and management took a pledge as a ‘Suicide Prevention Ambassadors’ under the leadership of the Club members. The awareness programme was effective with the active participation of students, teachers and the management. The ‘Suicide Prevention Awareness Week’ received an impactful closure with the address by the principal, Fr Maxim D’Souza to the gathering.
