Mangalore, Oct 12: 389 bags containing cashew nuts being transported from the city to Mumbai, worth around Rs 20 lac, were seized by the officials of the commercial tax department from Hubli. The bus, in which the bags were being taken, was intercepted near Hubli-Karwar by pass road on Monday October 11.
The officials found 389 bags of cashew nuts weighing 20 kgs each, in the bus. The bus was not carrying any passengers. The stock was not accompanied by any bills or records about the seller and buyer of the cashew. The officials, who have confiscated the bus and taken the bus driver into custody, are initiating steps for evasion of commercial tax, it is gathered.
Sources in the department said that those who had despatched the above stock without bringing it under the ambit of commercial tax rules, will be levied a fine of about three lac rupees, if they approach to claim the stock.
