Mangaluru: Plans afoot for more bus bays on important roads

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Aug 7: In addition to bus bays which are already existent in the city, depending on needs and availability of space, more bus bays will be constructed in the city. The bus bays are planned for important roads in Mangaluru south legislative constituency limits with the aim of allowing smooth movement of vehicles.

Currently there is heavy traffic on the main roads of the city. Therefore, the need for creating bus bays was felt. It has been planned to undertake this project under Mahatma Gandhi Nagar Vikas Yojana at a cost of Rs 1.09 crore. Already there are bus bays here in places like Lalbagh, Ambedkar circle, Nanthoor, circuit house, Kulur etc. New bus bays are planned at Bunts Hostel, Mallikatte, Maryhill, Kulshekar etc.

The government had distributed Rs 125 crore in 2019 under the said scheme, and between 2019-20 and 2023-24, for five years, approvals have been given for action plans covering Rs 99.93 crore. Out of these funds, Rs 1.09 crore has been earmarked for bus bays.

Bus bays are separate reserved spaces in bus stands for stopping of the buses. For this purpose, the roads are widened in a semi-circular way. In some cases, there is provision for entry from one point and exit from the other. Moreover, when buses are stopped in the bays, the normal vehicular movement is not obstructed. Besides concreting the bus bays, traffic cones will be placed and modern bus shelters will be created.

Lot of hype and publicity was seen before election with regard to mangaluru bus stand. Leaders promised this to happen within two years. Now election over, leaders are happy and bus stand is no more an issue it seems. Conveniently forgotten and public is made to suffer as usual. BJP or CONGRESS no difference at all.

Bus bays are built at us taxpayers' expense but the buses stop in the middle of the road to off-load passengers, thus halting the traffic behind. Please install CCTV and penalize the busses that violate the facility.
