Chikkamagaluru, Aug 7: In a bizarre incident that took place in the district where men demanded liquor bars in the town while women urged to close the same.
Villagers of Anche Chomanahalli and nearby areas of Kadur taluk protested in front of the excise office urging that liquor bars should not be opened in their village at all. However, a group of men said that they want it as they cannot live without liquor.
Daily wage labourers live in large numbers in Anche Chomanahalli and nearby areas. There are people belonging to nomadic tribes also. Women of this area say that their husbands consume liquor to the brim and come home in inebriated condition. So they shed tears in front of the media not to open a liquor bar in their village.
On the other hand, the men say that they do hard physical labour all day and they need liquor every evening. Otherwise their hands and feet will not move. At present the nearest bar is at a distance of 10 km from their village and they say that it is not possible for them to go to the bars at such a distance after working the whole day.
Both the groups have submitted an appeal to the deputy commissioner with their requests. Excise department is neutral in this regard as deputy commissioner is the final authority to close or open a liquor bar.
