Mysuru, Aug 5: The district police have busted a racket involving sale of children. They have arrested a mother-daughter duo of Srimathi (60) and Srilaxmi (31) from Nanjangud. The two had recently sold two children aged three and eight months respectively. District superintendent of police (SP), R Chetan, addressing a press conference here on Wednesday August 4, revealed that both the children have been rescued.

In a case which happened in Nanjangud town, a lady had given birth in a hospital. When the Anganwadi workers went to check the general wellbeing and health of the mother and child, they were informed that the child was in a relative's house. However, when the workers went there, they did not find the child. The child development programme officer who grew suspicious, complained to the police. The police who then grilled the mother, came to know that because of the poverty and death of her husband, the child had been sold for four lac rupees. When the police took into custody Srimathi and Laxmi and questioned them, they confessed to have sold the child to a couple from Holenarasipur.

The second child too was sold to a couple from Kollegal because of poverty and husband's inability to earn more. The SP said that the children have been kept in the child care centre and investigation about who else is involved in the racket is progressing.
