Mangaluru, Aug 4: In view of the worsening coronavirus situation in Dakshina Kannada (DK) district, the district administration has been taking measures to contain the spread of infection. It has now decided to increase the target for daily tests to 12,000 in the district. Currently, on an average, 7,500 tests are performed in the district every day.

For this purpose, 30 additional laboratory technicians have been appointed and the concerned have been permitted to appoint technicians for local primary health centres. Arrangements have been made to provide a vehicle to each of the primary health centres so that performing of tests and delivery of samples to labs are made easy. It is also gathered that home guards have been deployed to function as marshals against those who do not wear masks and fail to follow social distance norms.

The district faces the problem of influx of patients from other districts in the light of better quality medical services available here, and these patients are counted as patients from this district. The district administration says that the district has not seen any deaths due to shortage of beds, oxygen, ventilators, and ambulances.

Out of 17 oxygen plants proposed in the district, permission has been received for 16. Six have already started functioning. The remaining units are expected to begin functioning by August 15. In addition to regional advanced paediatric care centre, a 35-bed intensive care unit for children is coming up in the district Wenlock Hospital here.
