Mangaluru: Post lockdown, liquor consumption declines - Beer sale slumps by 40%

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jul 29: After coronavirus infection shook coastal Karnataka, sale of liquor has come down in coastal districts. After the lockdown which was in force during the corona first and second wave, the liquor sale that had dwindled never picked up.

During the lockdown, liquor sale was permitted only between 9 am and 6 pm and therefore, sale of liquor was not up to the expected level. As many sectors stopped functioning, people dependent on them did not have money for liquor. Weekend curfew delivered further blow. Normally, highest liquor sale happens at the shops near the Kerala border but because the border was sealed, liquor sales did not pick up, say officials. Moreover, as functions including marriage functions were permitted on a minimum scale, liquor sales dropped.

As bars, pubs and hotels were closed, wine shops did brisk business. Some smaller wine stores suffered because of less stock. Migrant workers returned to their native places and people, out of corona fear, did not prefer cold beer, the officials say. Beer sales have decreased by 40 per cent. Bindushree, deputy commissioner of excise department, Dakshina Kannada, hopes that the sale will pick up in the coming months.

Comman man needs to chose between petrol/diesel and liquor. To maintain balance both cannot be taxed so heftily, or else get ready to face slump in sales.

Small business income = Zero Small time agents, other workers income = Zero The one & the only department where there is no loss in all seasons in the country even during Lockdown is Liquor business, anywhere, even if it is in the most inconvenient place, there will be no loss. Excise department still thinking of Liquor revenue? God save people. Almost all the people are thinking of money, searching earlier savings if any to get money, how to earn money for survival due to the pandemic situation. Stop drinking Liquor & live happily with your family, don't spoil your family atmosphere by consuming liquor. Liqour is not good for health at all. Wherever there is Liquor, there is no peace. Ask the Liquor companies, Liquor outlet owners, Excise department to give free health insurance cover when you buy their product. Are they ready for it? People, In US a bottle of Coke and Beer cost almost same....because taxes are almost same... For any consumable ....if taxes are reduced ....consumption is increased and revenues are increased by default....this is well know to all except our politicians....who survive by taking bribe from Liquor manufacturers by helping them to dodge taxes....I believe same is true with Petroleum products... ...Tak...Takk...

Clear sign of loss of jobs and diminishing income and irrational price hike for fuel and other commodities. The common man has lost the pleasure of hard work. We have become donkeys who work like 24/7 to make ends meet. So much so for ache din.

They have not reduced the excise hike that was imposed during the first wave and are talking about liquor consumption having come down. Do they think people are idiots? Loss of jobs and incomes are a result of government apathy towards the prevailing situation faced by the people who now have to pay more for consuming alcohol.

Exorbitant tax increase in every budget is the root cause for sales decline. Government squeezes money from poor daily wagers and small timers! Politicians least bothered and they are the only ones having money today!

No jobs, less income and the excise rate has been increased enormously. People can't afford to buy liquor. Nothing surprising, if the consumption will decrease more than 50%. Reduce the taxes on liquor and then, the sale may go up.
