Udupi, Jul 8: A party leader presented something that was in the form of the revered 'Kadsale' (carved sword with thick, wide blade that is jagged at the edges) to Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president D K Shivakumar, after the leader attended the Congress party meeting at the Congress Bhavan, Brahmagiri here.
When felicitating Shivakumar, Congress leaders had presented him with a memento which looked like the Kadsale, which is normally depicted as a sacred weapon in the hands of the Daivas. On this matter, social websites have been actively discussing its relevance. Many argue that the weapon associated with the Daivas should not have been used for political ends. Some others feel that it is an artificial memento, not a genuine Kadsale. Therefore, they feel that the issue is not controversial. Many have also questioned the need for raising a dispute as mementos linked to gods and goddesses are routinely presented to people including the leaders.
Karkala MLA V Sunil Kumar, feels that the Congress has insulted the Tulunadu by using Kadsale of the Daivas at a political forum. "Kadsale, which is holy and is held by the Daivas when giving assurances to the devotees, has special significance and they are sacred. The leaders could have given some other mementos but they chose to present a Kadsale, a part of the Daiva worship in coastal Karnataka," he said. He condemned the act duly terming this as intellectual bankruptcy of the Congress. He urged the Congress to tender an apology to the entire Tulunadu relating to this episode.
