Moodbidri, Sep 3: Mosaru Kudike as part of Srikrishna Janmashtmi was celebrated here on Thursday September 2 under the leadership of Gopalakrishna Temple trustee Guruprasad by the Sri Krishna Friends Club following the traditional custom of 45 years with a person attired as Krishna observes the act of breaking earthen pots using a club symbolizing triumph of good over evil.
As it is customary, Sudhakar Kulal donning the role of the Lord arriving from the temple dancing along the street in the tenkutittu Yakshagana style to the centre of the town to break the earthen pots hung from the ropes passed between the poles erected for the occasion. But the hitch is that the man breaks pots as many as possible not climbing on to a human pyramid, but jumping to break the pot using a club while local lads try to move it from his reach, all the while making sure that there is no spillage on his body from the pots. This act symbolizes clean victory of the virtuous. Earlier, Sudhakar’s father used to don the role.
The other sport, the local youth indulge in is climbing atop an pole smeared with mixture of grease and oil readied from an arecanut tree rendering it slippery and erected at a ground or central area of the town. Tied atop the pole are goodies in an earthen pot. Whoever successfully climbs the pole, which needs guts and quite a knack, takes home goodies and prizes by the local organization that holds the event.
Further, the club has been felicitating the veterans and also organizing dance programmes for about 25 years now. The recent addition to the programme is variety cultural entertainment shows that attracts a huge crowd.
