Mangalore, Aug 25: The policemen of Panambur station claim that with the arrest of a native of Assam, they have averted possible burglaries of a number of jewellery shops in the city and Suratkal.
After the people residing in the neighbourhood heard strange sounds near the entrance to Bykampady Indusrial Area, they alerted the policemen. The policemen found a suspicious-looking man loitering around the area. During questioning, the man, Mia Asgar alias Abbas Khan (24) from Assam, reportedly confessed that he had stolen an oxygen cylinder, DA cylinder and gas cutting torches from V A Garage in Bykampady Industrial Area on the night of August 22, complaint about the theft of which had been filed with the policemen. The thief reportedly was helped by his accomplices, Mustaq and Munna from Assam, in this theft.
Abbas revealed that he, along with his two friends, wanted to enter jewellery shops and cut through their safe lockers with the help of gas cutting equipments, before escaping to their state. The policemen are looking for the thief’s accomplices, who have absconded. On producing him in a court, he was remanded to 15 days judicial custody.
The arrest was made by Panambur police inspector, Valentine D’Souza and sub-inspector, Keerti Kumar along with other police personnel.
