Kuwait : Vegetable Market Row Pushes Prices to Sky High

KUWAIT, Jul 3 (Kuwait Times): Customers at the vegetable markets in Shuwaikh fell victim to high prices as a result of conflicts between the Suppliers Association and the Farmers Association, reported Al-Watan. The conflict resulted in tripling of the cost of some items.

The conflict began when the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor recognized Saleh Al-Anbaei as the head of the Farmers Association while Saud Al-Aradah insisted that his is actually still the organization's head.

Al-Aradah ordered that all local vegetable and fruit products be unloaded at the Shuwaik's market while the Public Authority for Agricultural Affairs and Fish Resources (PAAAFR) warned farmers that subsidizations will be stopped for products unloaded there. The PAAAFR informed farmers to leave their supplies at the newly established Sulaibiya vegetable market instead.

Meanwhile, 200 trucks of vegetables and fruits were banned from unloading at the market based on instructions from the Suppliers Association who acquired control of 80 locations in the market from the Kuwait Municipality. The ban was made temporarily until a new list of loading and unloading prices is decided upon.
