Mangaluru, Jan 26: City’s Chief Traffic Warden (CTW) hoisted the national flag on Republic Day at St Agnes College on Tuesday January 26.

Addressing the students, faculties, and parents, the 99-year-old Joseph (Joe) Gonsalves reminded the gathering that the Indian freedom was the by-product of tireless effort leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Vallabhbhai Patel, among several others. “Therefore, we owe our freedom and privilege of hoisting the national flag to the sacrifices of such great leaders and we must live up to the spirit of democracy,” he said.

Popularly called Joe, the CTW unfurled the Indian National Flag and also received Guard of Honour from the Senior Wing of National Cadet Corps (NCC), Army, and Air force.

The veteran leader who in 2015 was enlisted to serve as the Chief of the Traffic Warden Squad by the Mangaluru City Police said that age must never be the criteria to serve the community. “I was 94 when offered the position of CTW. But I had faith in myself and I was committed to serve the people for community,” he said.

In the backdrop of the 72nd Republic Day event, Joseph was also part of the event that oversaw the distribution of Merit Scholarship to 76 students by the St Agnes College Management.

In the backdrop of COVID-19, the limited gathering of participants was advised to maintained social distance and wear mask at all times.

Guest of honour Sr Dr Lydia Fernandes AC, president Sr Dr M Venissa AC, Sr Carmel Rita and Sr Dr Olivia were also present during the occasion.

Mihika compered the programme, Merlin welcomed the gathering and Ashwathi rendered the vote of thanks.
