Mangaluru: Undeclared curfew at Ullal beach after surprise police raid

Mangaluru, Jan 25: The beaches at Ullal wore a deserted look after 8 pm on Sunday January 24 and it looked as if the people had imposed a self, undeclared curfew in the region.

This was the result of a raid conducted at the beaches by the Ullal police under orders from the city police commissioner. The people in general are of the opinion that this action has hit the street vendors at the beaches, who have already been reeling under the after effects of lockdown, hard.

On January 16, under the instructions of the police commissioner, Ullal police had raided the beaches and taken people found to be roaming around to the police station and allowed them to go after issuing them a stern warning. On Saturday night, the police conducted another raid at the beaches at Thokottu Valapete, Uchila, Someshwar and Ullal at around 9 pm, took those found to have formed groups to the police station and made them to sit in a private hall. The police have been claiming that those found to be consuming alcohol in the pubic were rounded up. But several who were taken away were teetotallers. A number of people had come to the beaches for relaxing. Over a hundred people including fishermen residing near the sea, owners of the resort at the beach and others were confined to a hall.

The general opinion of the people is that police have to raid businesses found to be operating near the wine shops where drinks are served. They point out that the police never conduct raids there. They are of the firm view that the police department, by taking up a job which pertains to excise department, has made itself a laughing stock. They pointed out that rounding up of the tourists at the beaches will badly hurt tourism prospects of the city. As the video recording of the people who were taken away was done, it can defame the people who were not indulging in any illegal activities. Many also say that the police, who are expected to protect the people, have not been able to attend to that duty, and instead, they are driving tourists away, which will sully the image of the city.

The police said that they had escorted people away from the beaches legally, but allowed the people to go away after BJP block committee president Chandrahas Pandithhouse visited the spot and took the police to task. This clearly shows dereliction of duty. Police commissioner N Shashi Kumar visited the spot where the people were bundled together, gave them some advice and asked the police to let them go. When assistant commissioner of police, Ranjith, and Ullal station house officer, Sandeep, took steps to obey the commissioner’s order, a delegation led by BJP block president reached there and took the policemen to task after which the people were immediately allowed to go.

This listless action of the police appears like an effort to harass people in Ullal. The roadside vendors who hoped to make some money, are now cursing the policemen for robbing them of their livelihood.

Dear Police - There are various other important tasks to be executed other than apprehending a few people out to relax, so what if they have a peg or two. Please use your grey matter wisely.
This is nothing but pure misuse of power. With the intervention of political party, these innocents were released, which means you had nothing against them. What a pity. Cannot blame the grass root level cops, they are only executing the orders of their indifferent bosses.

I think nowadays few people from the Police department are more bothered about PR stunts than real issues,

unnecessary rides and harassing general people by video recording their movements will make our City feel like living in a dictatorship rule,

we support police when they take action against people involved in crime and anti social activities,

but now they have started video recording and other publicity stunts even for small small issues, live let live

The Word police stands for the civil force of a state, responsible for the prevention and detection of crime and the maintenance of public order. unfortunately in India police cant handle criminals or goons coz they have been backed up by local politicians and poor judiciary... police department should be public friends and not criminal friendly

One cannot compare Bangalore to Mangalore in any aspect.

The beaches all over from Mangalore to Kemmanu, are well maintained,
however, the Authorities of each Beach, must put a large NOTICE BOARD
highlighting WHAT IS ALLOWED AND WHAT IS NOT.. Plus specific hours
must be mentioned for public to visit the beaches say from 7am to 7pm,

The Police and as well as the Excise Dept. must not permit any Bar or Liquor
shops at and around any beach, and must warn people against drinking
alcohol on the beach if they bring from home. People too should be responsible
and all outsiders from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telagana, and Kerala must
be specifically not to cook, bathe, and drink on the beaches. Bus loads come
to visit temples and beaches around.

A small Entry Fee must be charged like Rs.10.- per head -Children Free, in
order to offset expenses to maintain the beaches.

Plus inspite of COVID, hordes of people visit the beaches on an every day basis
and not only on weekends like before, as most people study and work from home.
Hardly anyone wears masks or take other precautions - this should be monitored
    and checked.

Mr. Senseless_Shetty, Mangalore, Ullal, Someswar or Uchila are not in not in UP but in DK,

    which, once upon a time was called "ಬುದ್ದಿವಂತರ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆ " which transformed into "ಬುದ್ದಿ ಇಲ್ಲದವರ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆ "

which means "SENSELESS "!!!! However one thing is in common ie: in both places GOBERMENT is identical " Cow-Dung & Gau-Mutrr GOBERMENT!!!!

Dear commissioner sir , we are living in the 21st century. After Bangalore, mangalore can be considered as the most developed city, we are a group of educated peace loving people who are always ready to help one another . We work hard and to unwind ourselves we go to the beaches or drives, so now you're saying that going to beaches and going for a drive or taking a walk at night is illegal and the person can be detained? If people drink in the beaches of goa it's hospitality and you do it in mangalore it's a crime. Why don't you catch the big shots who park their Mercedes benz wherever they want and drink in the back seat, why is it that only the working class and youth is targetted? Is this a PR stunt? Times are changing, imagine having a smart City where you are not allowed to be free and live life the way you want to . People are supposed to feel safe around police but we feel opposite because of these actions. Cities like Bangalore and mumbai have people walking on the streets till midnight, and they call it the city that never sleeps, can you go and detain Anyone and everyone on the streets of mg road or Indiranagar who's walking at night? I repeat once again, we the educated people of mangalore cause no harm to anyone, let us live our life , protect us at the time of need and we will always be grateful to you.
