Karnataka farmers to join 'Bharat Bandh' against farm laws on Dec 8

Bengaluru, Dec 6 (IANS): Thousands of farmers across Karnataka would join 'Bharat bandh' on December 8 to protest against the 3 controversial farm laws and in support of their repeal, Karnataka Rajya Riatha Sangha president K. Chandreshekar said on Sunday.

"All members of about 300 farmers' organisations will participate in the day-long bandh on Tuesday in cities and towns across the state except in Bengaluru, where it (shutdown) will be observed on Wednesday for logistic reasons," Chandrashekhar told reporters here.

"As all our members will observe Bharat bandh in towns and villages across the state on Tuesday, they will come to Bengaluru on Wednesday to hold a day-long shutdown in protest against the laws and demand their withdrawal," he said.

Kodihalli Chandrashekhar

Extending support to hundreds of farmers in northern states staging protests in Delhi or over 10 days against the laws, Chandrashekar said the ryots in the state were also opposed to the APMC bill and the land reforms bill the BJP government had moved in the state Assembly in September, as these were against farmers' welfare.

A dozen members of the Sangha led by Chandrashekar participated for 3 days last week in the farmers' agitation on the Delhi border with Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.

Scores of trade associations and labour organisations, opposition Congress and Janata Dal-Secular are extending support to the 2-day shutdown on December 8 and 9 by the farmers in Karnataka.

Chandrashekar said: "About 50,000 farmers and workers will descend on Bengaluru from across the state on Wednesday in buses, trucks and tractors to lay siege on Vidhan Soudha, as it will be in session for passing the bills."

The farmers plan to court arrest if police prevent them from going to Vidhan Soudha due to prohibitory orders in view of the week-long winter session of the legislature from December 7-15.

"The farmers will hold processions, rallies and public meetings at Freedom Park in the city centre against the anti-farmer laws and bills of the central and state governments," said Karnataka farmer organisations union President K. Shanthakumar.

Accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of ruining the agriculture sector in the country, he said the NDA government had failed to fulfil its assurance of implementing the Swaminathan Committee report.

In a related development, the Karnataka Sugarcane Growers' Associations will stage demonstration in the city on Monday to express solidarity with farmers in northern states and support their demand to scrap the anti-farmer laws.

Association' state Organising Secretary A. Devaraj condemned the Delhi Police for using water cannons and tear gas on farmers who were protesting peacefully at the inter-state border over a week ago.

I appreciate the efforts of the central government about doing away with the system of Middlemen in Farm Products, and I believe therefore the Farm Bills are enacted.

Now, is the government ready to buy the product from farmers directly ? Give them the price of their grown items into their account, first hand. No agent, no any private buyers. Thereafter, whether its Ambani, Adani, Tata or Bata buys from the government, it's not my businesses. You fix the price of the product and we citizens enjoy fair price,

Is this possible Modiji ? If this is in your capacity, I will salute for fixing the Farm Bills. Otherwise, if the corporate to get products of his desire to be grown in our farms, please go away, don't take our farmers for granted.

Just for the sake of protesting ? Does not make sense. For a minute lets keep politics by the side . Let the Government listen to majority of the farmers in India, who welcome the Farm reforms including myself being a farmer. Punjab traders cums farmers are not the only representatives of farming community. So if the new laws are abolished then we are back to square 1, the middleman ,traders will get the big piece of cake. No wonders these so called farmers cum traders are super rich driving luxury cars and staying in luxury hotels during strike for days at a stretch.

    Titus,

Give me one example of a product that does not have a middleman ? Say, a toothpaste - are you satisfied that you are paying the exact MRP that is printed, not one paisa more ? At the same time, do you know that the seller whether wholesaler or retailer, gets more that 30% margin on the product by manufacturer but you get not even a paisa ? Upon that you are paying GST ? Well, the GST is included in the MRP but it's charged to you ? Neither the wholesaler/dealer pay one single paisa but gain the 30% ?

Well then, why are you all lamenting when the middlemen charging Rs. 100/- per Kg onions but the farmers get only 10 /- or even less ? Can you directly go to the farmer for each an every product ? Coriander grower, garlic grower, oil presser, wheat grower - can you ? Why is Modi up-to disturbing the system and giving the freedom to high end corporates to order what they want, from the farmers and get it grown custom made from the farm land ? Who ensures how much is the cost, and who ensures that the corporate pays or not ? Can a farmer go to court for unpaid sum ?

Think people, think before without blinking and saying that 'Modi is the savior' from middlemen.

Can anybody here explain what is the farmers fight all about.
And why only punjab farmers are affected. ?Anyone really knows what is the real problem with the bill ..or are you just opposing this because you hate the modi govt ..because its questioning the Imported cultures of which many are slaves..and breaking the corruption mafia of middle men.
The Khalistan sympathising Sardars should start their fight by claiming the Pakistan side of punjab for their Khalistan.
The Road infrastructure is definitely better than the previous corrupt congress regime ..which could not even build proper infrastructure for the common wealth games.. or its dismal failures in controlling terrorism. events like 26/11 are stark reminder of this hollow slave party called congress.
Agree that the road infrastructure can be better ..but its way better than the congress regime. TO give some local example ..I can see it in the completion of the gurpur bridge ,which had an old british era bridge made of steel. The congress govts failed to build this kind of infrastucture.
I can see that the NMPT road is far better ..Remember the NMPT road was horrible during the congress rule ..it was never pothole free.
India will be a major farm producing nation ,which will impact many farm products from europe and America ..we can understand their anxiety about this bill.

Farmer's concern is about getting MSP for their product. Other concerns include the upper hand of agri businesses and big retailers in negotiations, thus putting farmers at a disadvantage. The benefits for small farmers from companies are likely to reduce the engagement of sponsors with them. The farmers also fear that the companies may dictate prices of the commodities.

Aircraft/Missile building technology ?

This BJP Govt has been passing a lot of Anti Peoples Laws taking advantage of the Pandemic.

These three Farm Laws were passed even without a debate nor was opinion taken from all the stake holders. There was even no discussions in Parlament and finally the farm bills were passed with a voice vote in the Rajya Sabha in a most deceitful manner throwing all democratic norms to the winds. A lesson and an eye opernor to all Indians of the Autocratic and Arrogant manner in which a Single Party will trample on the rights of its citizens to please a few Crony Capitalists.

Suit Boot Ki Sarkar should go. If Indira Gandhi had Nationalized private banks, then a National Govt in future should Nationalize the Ambani and Adani Group of companies and restore PSU's etc in the hands of our Countrymen.

All people should support the farmers agitation and the Bandh on 8th and at Bangalore on the 9th.

@DSouza: Sir, Please read this below. The New Law favours only Corporates.

    Drawbacks (as per the farmers)
    1. With this law, mandis operated under the APMC law of the states will be abolished. After the end of the APMC mandis, the farmers will be forced to sell the crop to corporate companies at one-and-a-half price.
    2. Due to the abolition of the mandi system, there will be no purchase of crops on MSP.
    3. Farmers' products have been going from one state to another in the past and the provisions of the new law are only for the benefit of the corporate and not for the benefit of the farmers.
    4. Farmers will be exposed to the risk of fraud due to the entry of people without license or registration.
    5. In case of any dispute in the business with the corporate buyer, there will be a danger of farmers' interests being ignored.
Besides these, farmers fear losing their land and becoming "slaves" to the corporates as far as The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020 is concerned.
According to the farmers, The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020 is also in favour of big buyers.

BBC rightly said "The moral of the story is Indian agriculture needs deeper structural reforms after consultations with stake holders and political parties." Unlike demonetization, there was no need to enforce something in a hurry. Sure, some political parties may oppose anything the NDA does, but if the farmers themselves agree, then views of the political parties who are opposing becomes irrelevant. There could have been ways of avoiding middlemen + choice should have been given to the farmers of selling their produce either through APMC or sell it directly to anyone who wants to buy and to this end, a national level agricultural produce selling online portal could have been created with farmers selling their produce at the price they want. If no reforms are carried out, then, too many farmers tilling smaller pieces of land will remain poor and will depend upon government subsidies life long. While NDA has been able to make impressive progress on the infrastructure front, for economic reforms such as agricultural reforms, they need better economic advisors who knows the Indian agriculture very well. And to make this worse, some political parties use farmers to their advantage.

My humble opinion is that it is incumbent on each and every one of us to support the farmers in their effort to get justice. All of us owe a lot to these poor people who toil day and night to earn a livelihood and in the process provide us with our daily food. Farmers in our country are the most neglected lot although they occupy a very prominent place. Can anyone think about the consequences should a farmer stop growing paddy, wheat, fruits and vegetables? Undoubtedly, we will be devastated.
Unfortunately, we have a ruthless and ungrateful government which is trying to favour the millionaires at the cost of the hapless farmers. Just look at the way the government is trying to stop the farmers by using water canons on the peaceful crowd in the biting cold that has enveloped Delh. What justification is there for the government to be so harsh to those who feed us?
It is extremely sad and disheartening to take note of the fact that this government is dancing to the tunes of those who financed it to come to power. This is the time for every Indian to join hands with our brother farmers and ensure that they are not deprived of their livelihood. If we fail them now, even God will not forgive us. This government has done a lot of disservice and injustice to the people of this country in their attempt to please and favour those who helped them come to power. We have elected a Prime Minister who is bending over backwards to please his millionaire cronies. And all this is coming at the expense of India and its people.
