Mangalore, May 11: The Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner has informed that additional police forces have been deployed in polling booths considered sensitive, and the entire process of polling will be videographed. He has asked the people to exercise their franchise freely and fearlessly in the gram panchayat (GP) elections being held on May 12 for 3,208 seats spread over 199 GPs.
The district administration has completed the elaborate preparatory process in connection with the elections. Out of 1,115 polling booths, polling will be held in 1,103 booths, as other seats have been won by candidates unanimously. 252 booths have been grouped under sensitive category, while 176 have been treated as hyper sensitive. A total 5,015 personnel and 507 vehicles have been deployed for conducting the election. Out of 8, 96,719 voters in the district, 4, 45,606 are men, and the balance 4, 51,113 are women.
The urban and rural areas in the district have been declared off-limit for liquor from 7 am on May 11 to midnight on May 12. The district administration has also requested Kasargod district administration to enforce this step in the border region.
