Udupi, Apr 21: National bird peacock was crushed under the wheels of speeding vehicle on NH 17 at Mulur, near here on Tuesday April 20 night. The personnel from forest department arrived to retrieve the dead peacock and buried as prescribed in the Wilde Life Act.
The wild animals including birds are venturing into plantations and farmlands, in search of food and pastures, especially in the surrounding areas of Kaup – Padubidri, on either side of NH 17. As the deforestation has been rampant in the district to facilitate setting up heavy industries, it has put severe strain on the wild animals and birds to get their food for sustenance.
The wild animals and peacocks are being sighted throughout the day and night in the neighbouring villages that lies close to forest and thus several peacocks have died run over by the motorists when attempting to cross the NH.
