Body of Hamzah AlZayadni recovered in Gaza, confirmed by Israeli army

Jerusalem, Jan 10: The Israeli army has confirmed that one of the bodies recovered from Gaza earlier this week was that of 23-year-old Hamzah AlZayadni.

Hamzah's body was retrieved alongside his father, Yosef AlZayadni. Both were taken hostage during the Hamas-led incursion into southern Israel 15 months ago. While Yosef's identity was established quickly, Hamzah's remains underwent verification before confirmation.

In recent weeks, Israel and Hamas have been engaged in discussions that signal a possible ceasefire and the release of hostages. Palestinians and families of those killed in captivity have been urging the Israeli government and international leaders to broker a ceasefire agreement.

Casualties and displacement amid the conflict

Gaza’s Health Ministry reports a staggering toll from the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict: 46,006 Palestinians killed and 109,378 wounded. Women and children account for more than half of the fatalities, though the ministry does not specify how many were civilians or combatants.

Israel claims to have killed over 17,000 militants but has not provided evidence. It attributes civilian deaths to Hamas's operations within residential areas.

The relentless conflict has displaced hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, forcing many into crowded tent camps along the coast with minimal access to basic necessities.

War's origins and current hostage situation

The conflict traces back to October 7, 2023, when Hamas-led militants attacked southern Israel, killing approximately 1,200 people and abducting around 250. Of the 100 hostages still held in Gaza, about one-third are believed to have died.

As the war continues with no clear resolution, calls for a ceasefire and humanitarian aid grow louder on all sides.
