State to Frame Housing and Habitat Policy: Chief Minister

Panaji, Mar 26: The Goa government will frame a housing and habitat policy to put a lid on rampant and unplanned real estate development in the state, Chief Minister Digambar Kamat said Thursday.

Kamat, also the finance minister, in his budget speech Thursday further said that the policy was prompted by an urgent need to "seriously view the housing scenario in the state".

"I propose to constitute a team of professionals to frame a comprehensive housing and habitat policy for the state with due consultations with all stakeholders," Kamat said.

Goa, which has witnessed a real estate boom in recent times, has seen the price of land and residential premises shoot through the roof.

This, according to Kamat, has emerged as an area of concern.

"In-migration, proliferation of slums, rampant real estate development, has in fact prompted my government to seriously view the housing scenario in the state," Kamat said.

"There are complex issues which need to be analysed, studied and conclusions arrived at for initiating appropriate policy measures," Kamat said.
