Udupi, Nov 23: "Literature is a powerful tool for expanding our intellectual horizons and knowledge. In today’s digital age, it’s crucial to instill a love for literature among the youths," said Fr Denis D'Sa, spiritual leader of Thottam Santa Annamma Church, after inaugurating the Gramaloka (Village Literature Meet) on Saturday, November 23.

Organised by the Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi, and Thottam’s Social Media Commision at the Thottam Vidyadayini Auditorium, the event provided a platform for rural writers to showcase their talents.

Fr D'Sa stressed that such initiatives help nurture literary passion while contributing to personal growth. He also urged the modern generation to think creatively, emphasising that becoming a writer doesn’t require writing long novels—short stories, poetry, or humour can be powerful expressions of creativity.

Melvyn Rodrigues, convener of the Sahitya Akademi’s Konkani Advisory Committee, shared insights on the academy's initiatives, explaining that Gramaloka is designed to support local literary talent.

Clarence Fernandes, renowned Konkani writer and critic ("Nanu Marol"), chaired the event, while prominent authors such as Sannu Monis, Catherine Rodrigues, Gyanadev Mallya, Donath D'Almeida, and Kishore Gonsalvis presented their works.

The event was attended by Sunil Fernandes, vice-president of Thottam Church’s Pastoral Committee. Raymond Fernandes, coordinator of Thottam’s Social Media Commission, delivered the vote of thanks, and H M Pernal, member of the Sahitya Akademi’s Konkani Advisory Committee, hosted the programme.
