Udupi, Jul 28: Dr Ranjan Pai took over as president of MAHE Trust on July 11 from his father Dr Ramdas Pai who was the founder president of MAHE Trust for 27 long years. He also took over as the registrar of the Academy of General Education (AGE) on July 12, 2018, started by his illustrious grandfather, Dr TMA Pai, founder of the Manipal group of institutions in 1942 to provide skill, education and healthcare to the community. Dr Ramdas M Pai was the registrar of AGE from January 2009 to July 2018. Academy of General Education is the mother of all the educational and healthcare institutions started by the Manipal group.
For the last two decades, he has worked closely with Dr Ramdas Pai and the other top leadership of MAHE on strategy, campus development, employee welfare, compensation and new branch campuses expansion. Dr Ranjan Pai has been on the MAHE Board of Management and Trust from 2004 onwards.
Dr Ranjan Pai has continued to maintain the pioneering and innovative approach and outlook that the group has always been known for. In 2005, with ambitious expansion plans in the private education and healthcare sectors, he invited private equity investment in the group companies which, in a short span of a decade and a half led to its businesses being valued highly and which continue to be attractive magnets for private equity investors. Expansion into health insurance and the acquisition of hospitals has given the group a dominant national presence in healthcare.
A serial start-up promoter and sponsor, Dr Ranjan Pai supported and encouraged many a young entrepreneur in the start-up space, some of who have become unicorns. He is currently the chairman of MEMG. However, education will always be the centre of his attention – to further strengthen the legacy, the seeds of which were sown seventy years ago. He firmly believes that the group’s universities, spearheaded by MAHE, should continue to build quality and focus on excellence, while being affordable, to attract the best of students and faculty. He has already created endowments in the universities in India, that will be continuously augmented with the intent to make them strong financial pillars that these institutions can take support from in their mission towards achieving and maintaining excellence.
