Udupi, Jul 16: On the first day of lockdown on Thursday, July 16 Udupi city looked normal and daily activities appeared to be going on as before. All the shops, markets, shopping malls, clinics, hospitals, hotels, industries, etc are working as before. Due to the sealing down of borders in the district, the city, service and government buses have suspended operations for the next 14 days. The lockdown affected employees, travellers, and others who are dependent on buses for their regular travel. Auto rickshaws and taxis are operating.
Some of the shopping centres have been voluntarily closed down because of meagre business.
Some streets in the city are busy, as most of the people came out on their own vehicles. The district administration has given permission to goods vehicles moving between districts. Around 10 borders were sealed to avoid unnecessary movements of vehicles. They are Hejamadi, Shiroor, Hosangadi, Sanur, Someshwar, Kolluru, Bajagoli, Kanthavara, Alagundi of Saccheripete and Sankalri.
Inter-district moment between Chikkamagaluru, Shivamogga, Dakshina Kannada and Uttara Kannada was stopped on Wednesday, July 15 at 8 pm. Police will work in three shifts in the district in order to provide 24-hour service. Check posts have been installed at all district borders.
