Mangaluru: ‘Stay positive, coronavirus infection does no harm’, says MLA Dr Bharath Shetty

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jul 14: The first MLA from Karnataka to have been infected with coronavirus and healed, Dr Bharath Shetty, has advised the people never to lose heart after getting infected with the coronavirus. "It does not harm 98 per cent of the people. The secret lies in remaining positive and staying mentally strong," he said, speaking to a Kannada newspaper after getting discharged from the hospital.

Dr Shetty, who represents Mangaluru (North) constituency, was admitted into the hospital for coronavirus treatment on July 2 and discharged on July 12. He said that many do not even realise that they were infected by the coronavirus. People with good disease resistance do not suffer from the ill effects of the disease. At the same time, no one should neglect it. People who suffer from its symptoms, even if they remain at home, have to maintain social distance and wear masks to protect themselves and the family members, he advised. Saying that coronavirus infection is not lethal, he said that no one should get scared of it and fear should not be induced about it among the others. He said that the 14-day home quarantine after discharge is a must.

The MLA confessed that he does not know how he acquired the infection and that he got himself tested after he suffered from fever, after which his sense of taste and smell were impaired.

We have to appreciate MLA Bharat Shetty for the words of instilling confidence among people. When we hear the Kannada TV Channels of Karnataka State, people are horrified as they exaggerate the Corona Virus and make the viewers totally nervous. They broadcast the news in such a way that all those who get Corona Virus may not survive. We do not know why the Government is not advising such channels not to discourage people from morning till night.
Corona Virus cannot be airborne. If so it would have spread at community level.

While I understand if he wants to be circumspect or provide a message of hope, the reality is the 5~6% of those infected who need critical care are not able to get those. That is the real issue.

Bangalore hospitals are turning away the patients. So, what is seemingly hopeful message may be misinterpreted and the risk is real. Most importantly, if infection does no harm, why go for a complete lockdown for a week. Politicians must be very serious in times such as these. They cannot blow hot and cold like WHO, whose credibility is lower than the trash can filled with dry waste.

If his doctor training is what made him say this, he should know lot of doctors around the world have lost their lives to this infection that does no harm.

Need of the hour is political leaders leading from the front and ensure all requiring critical care get it, and prevent opportunistic hospitals from ripping apart patients.

Migrants who, due to sudden declaration of lockdown, got trapped had a torrid experience of rushing back to their native places! Thinking that things have settled they returned back to the city! Now, due to announcement of fresh lockdown, they panicked & rushed back to their native places in large nos! IMHO, this will be counterproductive both from infection control & economic point of view! These migrants had such a horrendous experience once earlier that they may not return soon creating a big economic impact on restarting the economic cycle!

It's very important that we restart the economic cycle as early as possible as we have already hit rock bottom!

The above is a very personal opinion only!

Influential people like Dr. Bharath Shetty and others have got admitted in KMC and enjoyed world class treatment at the cost of common man.

Distress call from middle class and poor is declined by KMC stating that beds are full.

This MLA has no moral rights to climb on roof top and claim corona infection is nothing. It is everything affecting the lives and livelihoods of common man.....!

Govt should implement large scale in-house treatment at the homes of corona + cases... once a person tests +ve, along with the test report, the course of medicines should be handed over along with clear instructions....in case there is deterioration or worsening symptoms, patients should approach hospitals...

There is a great difference between general public and VIPs. VIPs will get best treatment at best Hifi hospitals but general public struggles to get admission in the ordinary hospitals.

Now WHO is indirectly recognising Covid19 to be an airborne infection under certain conditions (floating aerosols which remain in the air for around 14 minutes) and not specifically spread through sneezing & coughing so it's imperative that COVID19 will not spare anyone; this is evident from the fact that it has knocked on the very rich & powerful! Amitabh who used to play safe & advise others loudly has been the latest victim!
IMHO, unnecessary testing & admission to hospital should be avoided unless the victim becomes critical, treat it at home using conventional means by taking antipyretics, sipping hot water, taking mineral & vit supplements plus a healthy diet of light food, complete rest; for cough one may take a precautionary course of azithromycin!
Checking the oxygen levels by using a pulse oximiter would be very useful; consistent oxygen levels below 90 requires immediate attention!
IMHO, in a densely populated country like India lockdown is useless & counterproductive as the infection will spread with more vengeance post lockdown!
Even institutional quarantine of asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic patients should be avoided on an overloaded system & home quarantine enforced!
Treatment protocols followed by advanced & thinly populated countries cannot be extrapolated to a densely populated country like India!
BTW, random declaration of lockdown is also counterproductive as migrants tend to run from home to city thus giving a scope for further spreading across diverse areas!
BTW, new research in London shows that in 85% of recovered patients lose immunity in 90 days, which implies that mankind will have to stay with the virus!
SOCIOECONOMIC EFFECTS OF CORONA CONUNDRUM WILL BE VERY VERY PAINFUL AND PROLONGED!
Some poor people (Palghar) who have lost their jobs are said to be eating leaves of jungle trees & surviving in absence of any source of income!

The above is a very personal opinion based on my knowledge & understanding & NOT an advice!

Do not dilute the harm caused by Covid-19. Even if someone is recovered, it leaves some permanent damages in the body including the brain.
So everyone, be scared ob corona infection and stay safe from getting infected.

If in case you contract the virus, it doesn't mean that you have go under ventilation. Majority of the positive cases and asymptomatic cases don't need medications too. It won't even be as severe as a viral fever. But YOU can spread it to vulnerable weak immuned people. So stay safe, wear masks and most importantly MAINTAIN YOUR SOCIAL DISTANCE!

It is true. To fight this pandemic, it is very important that we keep ourselves very busy with various kinds of work like gardening, exercising, laughing & smiling, talking good about everything in life to family friends and relatives, have a peg or two every day (internal sanitizer), eat good food that keeps you happy especially home food, keep walking every day, meet friends every day keeping social distancing, wear masks and gloves, avoid being outside too much, Dont take tensions and stress yourself unnecessarily, Keep you body lively and so on.

Dr Bharath Shetty sir is absolutely right. Young, fit people who does not have underlying health conditions (eg. Diabetes, uncontrolled hypertension, immuno suppression (by inherited or acquired like HIV or by organ transplant), will have mild symptoms and recover well. Of course there were few young people died in the world, they are very rare cases. Professor Dr Edward Nazereth (MBBS, MS, D ortho) has written articles on diajiworld, Please read, very informative. We request, every one to read the information. Mortality due to covid 19 for under 65 aged people is very low if they don't have underlying health conditions. Professor Dr Edward Nazerath, has suggested some immune boosting ideas. Me and my wife have been working full time in UK since Covid 19 broke out. One has to take adequate precautions. We wish good health and safety to all of you. We need to be positive, pandemic will be eventually over, but it will linger for some time. Latest UK study says herd immunity may not last. On going precaution is essential.
