Kasargod: Excise squad seizes Rs 2.87 crore Hawala money, gold ornaments

Kasargod, Jul 14: In an operation launched by the excise squad of Kumble in the district on the night of Monday July 13, it was able to seize Rs 2.87 crore in cash, which is said to be belonging to Hawala operatives, and 20 sovereigns of gold ornaments. A Mangaluru-based youth was taken into custody relating to this incident.

The name of the youth who was arrested in this connection has been given as Irshad (33), a native of Mangaluru, who currently resides at Udyavar, Manjeshwar. The excise squad which was checking vehicles at Toominadu on national highway traced this illegal Hawala money being transported in a car.

A swift car in which the cash and gold were being taken sped away at the sight of the excise squad staff. The squad members chased the car, took the occupant of the car into custody and checked the vehicle when money and gold were found.

The cash seized comprises of currency notes of Rs 2,000 and 500 denomination. The cash and gold ornaments have since been handed over to Manjeshwar police for further investigation.
