Bengaluru: Online classes short of quality - Lack of technological knowledge deterrent

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Jul 11: After the state high court allowed holding of online classes in the state, private schools have prepared time tables and started to hold classes. But the fact that most of the teachers lack knowledge of technology has been hindering the smooth conduct of these classes. Therefore, the quality of teaching has not been reaching the expected level. As such, school managements are facing difficulties.

It is learnt that even during the period online classes were banned, some schools had suspended online classes but many had continued with them. After the high court order seemed to support the notion that online classes are part of fundamental rights conferred by the constitution, the private schools have resumed these classes with renewed vigour.

Several schools which collect huge amounts by way of fee, have separate software for organizing online classes. The teachers impart education either from homes or schools. Some schools which have budgetary restrictions, hold classes from home by using apps like Zoom, Google Class etc. Online classes involve prescribing homework for the students, scrutinizing it once done and evaluating them etc. Because of the lack of enough knowledge about the use of software and equipment of teaching, the teachers are finding it hard to cope up with the need to maintain the desired quality. The fact that equipment available in markets is costly has also created new problems for the teachers.

Network

In the recent past, getting a proper network is a problem. The teachers have to reach some corner of the house where the signal is strong and conduct classes from there. As a result, conducting classes poses a challenge for the teachers. Some of the private schools have stopped paying salary to teachers while some others are reportedly paying only half the sum. In order to get their salaries, the teachers are under compulsion to conduct online classes.

Technological issues

The teachers do not have cameras, video editing facilities, tripod, 5G internet connection etc at home, which are needed for effective teaching. They are also confused about the speed with which they can take lessons and also in how many minutes a lesson has to be finished, etc.

I think e learning giants like ELessons.net should join hands with government and support. its not practical for rural areas to have recording facility. Instead existing resources should be used to create quality content . I am sure elessons , Mangalore will support the initiative of the government during this tough period considering the pandemic.
Elessons.net have high quality content and they are already adopted many schools in gulf.

As children are now spending more time watching the screen, kids will be prone to eye issues, head aches, neck and back problems too.
They spend 2 hrs for interactive classes and to do homework and assignments 2 to 3 hours additional. As they can't play outside now they watch phones for entertainment. Most parents are against online classes, the schools are conducting it against parents wishes citing court order.

Yes, there is urgent need to press reset button. May be good idea to start academic year from Jan to Dec? It would give Govt to chalk out national strategy for Education, design & implement curriculum suiting demands for Post covid world.

This online classes are good but teachers and students should be ready for that. There are many disadvantages for students as well as teachers. There are many poor students who can't afford have one computer. Online classes mean every student have a computer of their own.

Once you overcome teething problems, online classes can go on smoothly. Only issues need to be resolved are high speed internet connection and affordability of laptop/ smart phone with each of the students. I know of online classes which are going on smoothly since the first lock down and by now 80 percent of portion is completed. Even regular online tests are conducted and evaluated. Gradually system softwares are also improved. With integrated white board even mathematics can also be taught online easily. Everyone has to rise to the occasion.
Where there is a will there is a way.
May be going forward online classes may be the common preferred delivery of knowledge unlike classroom teachings.
