Udupi, Jul 11: In view of the growing coronavirus cases across the state, NSUI Udupi district demanded the cancellation of final year university examinations and the promotion of all the students.
A press release issued by Christan D'Almeida, president of NSUI Udupi district, stated that as corona cases have been increasing rapidly, any exam in this crisis will be unfair for the student community, be it online or offline. The government needs to understand the ground reality and the struggle of young India.
He appealed to the authorities to listen to the voices of millions of students in the country and help them get promoted without forcing them to sit for exams in these trying circumstances.
"In Karnataka there are no assembly proceedings going on. Theatres are not opened, limited people can attend weddings, no mass gatherings, but government wants innocent students to come and answer exams? That is so unfair.
"All political activities are shut across the state as well as the country, all offices are not operational on full strength and UGC wants to do an experiment on the lives of students just for their hidden motives.
"As we welcome the state government's decision of promoting 1st, 2nd and 3rd year degree students, we also demand the government to promote final year students based on past performance with 10% extra marks since it is observed that students improve their performance in the final year.
"Congress leader, Rahul Gandhi on Friday demanded cancellation of university exams and urged the UGC to promote students on the basis of past performance during the coronavirus pandemic.
"As per the call by the NSUI and Congress party, Udupi district unit had also started #SpeakUpForStudents social media campaign where thousands of students from the district showed their support by cancelling the final year examination.
"National Students Union of India (NSUI) demanded 10% extra marks for the final year student because it is generally observed that the students usually improve their marks in the final year. This pandemic due to the outbreak of coronavirus has made every sector suffer a lot, including the students. The university should promote the students this year."
