Moodbidri, Jun 24: Technology has been the silver lining in the fight against COVID-19 and has changed the way the world is battling the pandemic. Students from Mangalore Institute of Technology & Engineering (MITE) here, designed viable solutions that would aid the people who are combating COVID-19 from the front: A website that provides crucial information on COVID-19 and a low-cost Automatic Sanitizer Dispenser.
Sriram S, a student of Mechatronics Engineering designed a sensor-based automatic hand sanitizer dispenser that is portable and low-cost. The dispenser that could be handy in public places has a cost of production below INR 1000 and is a step closer to preventing community spread of COVID-19. The touch-free dispenser uses a sensor to detect and hence activate a pump that dispenses the sanitizer. The model uses a USB charger to power up and could be table or wall-mounted. The dispenser is installed at Aadya Dental Clinic in Bengaluru and would be installed in a few more clinics this week.
The student team from Information Science, Joy D’Souza, Niranjan Mallya, Shashank and Praneeth designed a website, Corona Tracker with which one can have an eye on the number of positive cases, recovery and death toll and other details of COVID-19 of a region. The live verified data is fetched from the API to be displayed on the website. This includes the detailed statistics which consist of numbers such as confirmed COVID-19 cases, the number of patients recovered and the number of deaths, etc. The website also flaunts an interactive chart of India through which the user could find COVID-19 cases across the states just by hovering over it.

MITE, a leader in innovation!
MITE has set up a conducive ecosystem to promote innovation and hence invent solutions. The technology clubs at MITE not just trigger the best in students but provide a platform to develop solutions. To ensure that the best ideas could be turned to products, MITE has developed a state-of-the-art incubation center spanning over 5500 sq ft on par with industry standard. The center has received a grant of INR 1.2 crore from the government of Karnataka and INR 65 Lac from the government of India through which student innovative ideas are seed-funded from INR 3 to 8 lac. Currently, 10 student ideas are incubated and functional in the Incubation Center with a project that has completed initial patent publication. The Incubation Center has air-conditioned office spaces, meeting rooms, and high-speed internet connectivity with the best-configured computers. The center has mentors from industry as well as successful local entrepreneurs on-board. The centre extends technical, management, and legal support to the entrepreneurs. MITE is a launch-pad for young entrepreneurs who have just begun to take-off.
