Mangaluru, Mar 24: Citizens of the city, who are generally believed to be educated and well informed, have showed scant respect to the need to maintain social distancing, which is the crux of lockdown. One wondered what is the district administration of Dakshina Kannada is doing, and whether the police force is absent, as people are seen going about with their routine and crowding the central market for buying vegetables and fruits.
Kalpana Sweets near central market distributed eatables free of cost. For this purpose, the shutter of the shop was kept half open. People vied with each other to collect these eatables. At the central market too there was heavy crowd and people freely went about bargaining for vegetables unmindful of brushing one another and moving around without wearing any masks.
In a nutshell, the people here are showing to the world that they do not have in their mind the need to be socially responsible. They also seem to have forgotten that maintaining a distance of six feet from each other can ward away coronavirus pandemic that is fast developing into a serious challenge.
The police and health department officials are conspicuous by their absence at markets where usual rush is being observed. It is clear that the people have overlooked the lockdown order of the district administration and they cannot sacrifice a little comfort for the sake of the wellbeing of the society.
