Kundapur, Nov 17: A few months ago, some anti-social elements had desecrated the idol of St Bernadette that had been installed in front of the grotto in the premises of Immaculate Conception Church Gangolli.
The sacrilegious act had wounded the religious sentiments of the believers, the authorities with whom complaints were filed in this regard, had failed to trace the culprits. However, with the co-operation of all the people, irrespective of their caste and creed, a new statue of the saint was installed and sanctified on on Sunday, November 15.
Earlier to the ceremony, the statue was ceremoniously taken in a procession from Gangolli post office to the church premises. It was later consecrated in the presence of vicar general, Fr Monsignor Dennis Moras Prabhu with religious rites and rituals. Thereafter, a gathering of harmony meet was held. Speaking on the occasion, Fr Denis Moras Prabhu said peace would prevail in the society, when the people of different faiths learn how to live together in compassion and tolerance. He blessed and thanked the members of all the communities for their cooperation and help in maintaining peace and harmony when the shocking news of the broken idol spread and a pall of gloom had descended over the town.
Chief guest S Janardhan, journalist and other guests at the dais praised the virtues of Christianity, especially the principles of tolerance and compassion. Father Alphonse D’Lima welcomed the guests. Vedavyasa Acharya delivered introductory speech. Jerald Crasta, vice-president of the church, proposed vote of thanks. Vinod Gangolli monitored the programme. Fr Alban D’Souza and Fr Anil Cornelio were present on the occasion.
