Davanagere, Feb 29: One of the historical temples of the state, Ucchangiyellamma of Ucchangidurga in Harappanahalli of the district was demolished on Saturday under Supreme Court order.
This temple was located by the road side in the middle of Ucchangidurga village. This was obstructing the connectivity of roads between Harappanahalli and Ucchangidurga. As the traffic was getting affected, the same was ordered to be demolished by the Supreme Court.
The temple was demolished by the used of JCB in the presence of Tahsildar and police personnel.
This temple has got thousands of years of history. On the days of full moon and no moon hundreds of devotees used to throng this temple. When the SC ordered the demolition, villagers and devotees expressed objection. However, DC, SP and Tahsildar succeeded in convincing the villagers and devotees that they have to follow the order of SC and got it demolished.
Devotees were anxious that some evil thing might happen due to the demolition of this temple which is held in high esteem by locals.
