Sullia, Feb 29: In what can be called shameful for the administration of the taluk, Dalits carried the dead body of a person for more than half km on their shoulders.
This incident is reported at Jayanagara Kodankeri Dalit Colony on February 25. There are seven houses in this colony but no road access. For the same reason none of the vehicles enter this colony.
Dinesh, who was a resident of this colony, was admitted to Sullia government hospital due to illness. While taking him to hospital also the colony people had to carry him on their shoulders. Later, when he died in the hospital also they had to carry his body to home and back for cremation manually.
Locals who were enraged by the apathy of the administration staged a protest and appraised the matter with local town panchayat member Balakrishna Bhat Kodankeri and chief officer of town panchayat. Responding to the appeal of the residents of the colony, the officials assured them that action will be taken by taking the survey of the area.
The residents of this colony had appealed for road long ago. They even boycotted the town panchayat and assembly elections and also held protest for the same purpose. The protest during that time was withdrawn on the assurance of the then tahsildar of Sullia Kunhi Ahmed, who had visited the spot and had asked the concerned officials to collect the records required to construct a road to the colony. But till date no progress is made in this direction.
