Bengaluru, Feb 27: It is learnt that the government has been considering a proposal to reduce the quantum of rice being given to BPL ration card holders from the current seven kg a month to five kg. Instead, it is considering the chances of adding some pulses under its 'Anna Bhagya' scheme.
The said scheme was implemented by former chief minister, Siddaramaiah. 4.27 crore people spread over 1.22 crore families in the state are the beneficiaries of seven kg rice under the scheme. The government now wants to provide five kg rice and add some pulses. The government is paying Rs 26 to 28 per kg in the market for rice but gives the same to people free of cost. As the financial condition of the state is not good now, the government wants to cut short the rice and limit it to five kg, which conforms with the central scheme, per ration card.
After the scheme was implemented, more and more people are using rice and those who do not use rice, are selling in the open market. Therefore, the state government wants to cut short the quantum of rice being issued per card, and save about ten crore rupees per month, it is said.
In place of two kg rice, the government plans to give one kg toor dal, one kg sugar, one kg salt and one litre oil. The government has asked officials to check estimated cost and submit report. These pulses will be given at subsidized rate as it cannot afford to give them free of cost.
In north Karnataka, the government wants to give wheat or jowar by reducing the quantity of rice. In Old Mysore region, ragi may be issued. A decision in the matter will be taken by the government soon, it is said. However, minister for food and civil supplies, Gopalayya has not given any information on this issue.
