Udupi: MLA Raghupati Bhat, forest officer engage in verbal duel over tree felling

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (MS)

Udupi, Feb 24: Intense verbal battle ensued between MLA Raghupati Bhat and forest officer in the general meeting that was held at taluk panchayat premises on Monday, February 24 in regards to cutting of trees to widen Kunjalu road at Brahmavar in the district.

MLA Raghupati Bhat accused forest officer Muniraju of showing disrespect to him in the meeting. In his reply Muniraju said, "I have not shown any disrespect to you. I am an officer of the government department. Speak to me with respect."

Enraged by the bold answer given by forest officer Muniraju, MLA Raghupati Bhat got infuriated and took objection for Muniraju sitting with the people representatives and asked him to sit with the officials.

After forest officer Muniraju was seated in the line of chairs meant for officials, the verbal argument between the MLA and officer continued. At last unanimous decision was taken by all members of taluk panchayat against the forest officer that he has shown disrespect to the MLA.

Honest officer targeted by BJP

Forest officer Muniraju is known for his honesty. His love towards environment is known to the public of the locality.

Recently, Muniraju had taken stringent action against BJP politicians, who were allegedly involved in illegal timber trading. Keeping this in mind, it is being said that BJP leaders got united in the meeting to put the officer in trouble.

It is also being said that BJP leaders of the district have reportedly hatched a plan to transfer the honest officer, who has become a hurdle for their illegal tree cutting and timber business.

Environmentalists of the district, on the other hand, reportedly want the officer to be retained.

The Rig Veda venerates deities like Mitra, Varuna, Indra, Maruts and Aditya, that are responsible for maintaining the requisite balance in the functioning of all entities of Nature whether the mountains, lakes, heaven and earth, the forests or the waters.
I think this Udupi MLA has not learned the meaning of the Shlokha in the Vedas, which forest officer is emphasizing the importance of the environment.

MLA is MLA.Just a politician. Elected for a specific term. He can be thrown out if he is adamant and shows his arrogance. But Govt. Officer/Official is not like a politician. His term of service is upto 60 years. He can only be transferred by these dirty politicians. Nothing else. thats it.

There is just no place for upright civil servants in this country. The support of the MLA to the illegal timber traders is a clear indication of the abysmal levels to which morality in public life has fallen. Being a people's representative, it was the moral duty of the MLA to support Mr. Muniraju. What message does the MLA send to the people at large? He clearly appears to be hand in glove with the illegal timber traders. It is now upto the people of Udupi to standby an honest forest officer. After all, the officer is just doing his duty and it is certainly the responsibility of the people to ensure that no harm in caused to the officer. The people have clearly erred in electing people like Ragupati and Shobha and this is a good opportunity for them to make amends.
