Madikeri: Penalty for leftover food results in reduced wastage

Daijiworld Media Network - Madikeri (SP)

Madikeri, Feb 23: Of late, we find that lot of food is wasted at marriage functions, hotels and parties. In some countries, people who order food and leave unused food behind, are penalized.

A resort in Kodagu has succeeded in enforcing food discipline among its customers by imposing penalty for leftover food. Sensing that giving advice against wasting food does not serve the purpose, Ibnii Spa Resort located over a hill in the town has been imposing fine on customers leaving behind unconsumed food on the basis of the weight of such leftover food. After the implementation of the scheme a few months back, the resort says, the wastage has come down by over 90 percent.

As customers are sure to complain of waste if the entire food is served at once, this resort has allowed the customers to order food repeatedly in small quantities and also make changes in the earlier order so that wastage can be avoided or minimized. However, they should not leave food in their plates. For leftover food, the resort charges Rs 100 per 100 grams of wasted food. The resort donates the money so collected to an orphanage in the town. The resort believes that food saved goes to satiate the hunger of someone else.

Owner of the resort, Capt Sebastian, says that the above system has resulted in saving of food. He mentions that his resort has won national award for using leftover food and water to grow plants. As food waste drains away a country's resources, others including hotels can think of implementing such a system to avoid food wastage.

Penalty for leftover food reduced in reduced wastage-I fully appreciate and agree with the step taken by the hoteliers but at the same time owner of the hotel also realize that money has been already for the leftover food.In most of the hotels I visited tend will be like this-if we tell the waiter to pack the leftover food in a container, they will do so and we can take the same stuff to home and can be re-used after seeing the condition of the food or at least feed our animals like dog,cat and so on.Customer must be educated before penalizing on left over food.
Indeed I have seen lots of foods are being wasted, thrown mercilessly in many functions like marriages and other functions.Guests are also so crazy they take plateful of food whether they needed or not apart from taking plateful of food even to the small children. But instead of consuming it,they consume only part of the food taken and half of the food taken will be thrown inside the dustbin in spite of sign board alerting " Take as much as food you want but Don't waste it". But most of the guests ignore this warning and continue their business of wasting food. This trend is huge loss to the national exchequer and people who arrange the functions. Even my earnest request to all the concerned is that-take the food as many as times you need without any hesitation, don't feel shy but God sake don't waste it.

The customer has already paid for the food he or she she has ordered.
Give the customer a choice - allow them to bag the left over and take home for later consumption, rather than penalize them. In some restaurants food is weighed before it is paid for (on the basis of weight). Penalizing without a choice for the alternative is a drastic step and customers will stop coming to your hotel. Good for then! Think outside your box.

If he has paid for the entire food, he does not deserve it to waste!
It has become a style or fashion to leave food in the plate whether it is in a small eatery or star hotel.

In many of the Wedding and other functions/parties food is being wasted unnecessarily. The guests who attends such functions take some quantity first and then go for second round. Even some children take food more than they need. This wasting of food be avoided to avoid a big bill. People should be educated properly regarding this. The Madikeri Hotel has good decision.

Please think about this before stuffing your plate with food - Eat as much as you can, take as much as you eat.

Very good decision. I appreciate that steps. But at the same time they must keep limited food on the table or while serving, they must serve little. So if he requires only he will ask again. This system must implement in all marriages and in get together functions. I suggest that in every invitation irrespective of functions, they must give this message in bold letters. If everyone will follow this ,we can save lot of food. One more suggestion that water bottle should not serve. Water must provide in paper cups only.

So much food is wasted in lavish parties. Also pained at the amount of food that goes waste in marriages and other functions.People should really consume small quantities and then fill the plate again as per requirement if they like the food rather than taking everything at one go and wasting it.
