Panaji, Feb 10: As news of 300 persons onboard the cruise ship Diamond Princess being quarantined spread the families of several Goan seafarers were struck by fear. It is said around 50 of 300 persons onboard the cruise ship Diamond Princess which is off coast Japan are Goans.
As a preventive measure ship has been quarantined. Ship is reported to have travelled to Japan from China.
“Many Indian crew & some Indian passengers are onboard the cruise ship #DiamondPrincess quarantined off Japan due to #coronavirus. None have tested positive, as per the latest information provided by our Embassy @IndianEmbTokyo. We are closely following the developments,” external affairs minister S Jaishankar tweeted.
Commissioner of NRI affairs Narendra Sawaikar responded to Jaishankar’s tweet stating that of the 300 Indians onboard the ship, 50 were Goans.
Dixon Vaz of the Goan Seafarers Association of India said it is exactly unknown how many Goans are on board the ship. He also appealed all seafarers boarding ships to carry with them sufficient face masks and protective gear.
