Udupi: World Cancer Day celebrated at Kasturba Hospital Manipal, holds cancer support group meet

Udupi, Feb 5: As part of World Cancer Day, Kasturba Hospital Manipal hosted a programme for Cancer Support group and caretakers meeting.

Every year, February 4 is celebrated as World Cancer Day. The theme for this year was 'I am & I will'.

Chief operating officer C G Muthana was the chief guest of the programme and released the documentary made of one of the cancer survivors. Dr Padmaraj Hegde, deputy medical superintendent of Kasturba Hospital said, “This is very important to give awareness to the general public and this is a good opportunity for the caretakers to clear myths and misconceptions associated with cancer and its treatment. There are high chances of cure in the first and second stages of cancer, if detected at an early stage.”

Dr Umesh, Assistant Professor - Department of Radiotherapy Oncology, gave a talk on cancer and treatment available for cancer. Dr Karthik Udupa, head - Department of Medical Oncology, Dr Krishna Sharan, head - Department of Radiotherapy & Oncology, Dr Naveen Kumar, head - Department of Surgical Oncology and Dr Seema Rao, head - Department of Onco Psychology answered the questions and gave out useful information to the participants.

Nutrition and Dietitics specialist Amrita spoke about nutrition while Onco social worker Pavithra spoke about schemes and funds available for cancer treatment. Madhava shared his experience on cancer. Srinivas Bhagwat was master of ceremony.
