PT Usha Breaks Down after being Denied Decent Accommodation

Bhopal, Oct 6 (IANS) The Madhya Pradesh Government has ordered a probe into the alleged denial of separate accommodation to sprint queen P.T. Usha during the 49th National Open Athletics Championships, though the organizers say that the mess occurred as she was not on the official list of invitees.

Usha who has symbolised the woman power in India and is still an inspiration for thousands of women athletes after her fourth-place finish in the 400 metres at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, had Monday alleged that there was no one to receive her and her students at the airport and when she reached the Sports Authority of India's (SAI) center on her own, she was asked to share her room with five others.

"Most of the officers were busy welcoming Sports Minister M.S Gill," the ace runner told reporters at India Coffee House where she shifted after being refused separate accommodation at the SAI center.

She broke down before the reporters saying: "When I asked for a better accommodation, the officials refused, saying that I need to share my room with other athletes."

"The centre has my framed photograph in the hostel but when I reached there, no one even cared to at least provide me separate accommodation. Had my husband not booked a room for me in the Coffee House, I would have wandered on the city's streets searching for accommodation", Usha maintained.

The star athlete was also told that she would have to wait till 2.30 p.m. as a function chaired by Gill was underway at the SAI Centre.

"I waited in the rain, hiding myself under an umbrella at the SAI centre and finally reached the Coffee House at 2 p.m. and had food as I was hungry", Usha said.

Mumtaz Khan, secretary of the Madhya Pradesh Athletics Association, however, told IANS that Usha and her students were not on the official list of visitors for the championships that got underway Tuesday. News of her arrival came at the last moment and even then, a person was sent to receive her, he added.

Khan also claimed that though Usha's demands of stay and other facilities could not be instantly met at the last moment "we later reached the Coffee House and requested her to shift to the hostel where a room was exclusively booked for her but she refused".

PT Usha, Shouldn’t go if without proper invitation. And if she still wants to be an uninvited guest, then she shouldn’t expect Hospitality. I agree she once made India proud. And she was rewarded for that both Central and state government. She should digest the fact that her days are over. Regarding promoting her students, she should have followed proper procedures and made sure she has the acknowledgment for all the arrangements if she requested. Regarding Cricket People watching cricket are wasting so much of precious time / days in some cases for nothing. Cricketers get star status, they make a lot of money, play less cricket and more acting in ads, they are worshiped by some people, the sponsors and underworld make a fortune, and on the other hand people lose money in betting and precious time that they can spend with their family. Promote other games cricket is not everything, look at the performance of other countries in Olympic games.

I dont think she has to create a controversy. During her golden days in National and International Athletic Meets herself and her coach were enjoying five star accomodations and other athletes in the team were getting third grade accomodations and treatment. Can you imagine other athletes in the same team would have undergone at that time. Their needs were completely ignored due to the star status of P T Usha. At that time she was so arrogant and demanding, this matter was brought to the press and exposed by fellow athlete and national sprint champion Adelle Sumariwala. Now she feels the pinch as she is used to the star status. As the officials rightly said, she was not in the list invitees. And how one can expect the officials should create accommodation for her all of a sudden. It is a National Athletic Meet and all the Hotels must be full. And she was leading her team into that championship. Instead of giving importance to her team, she is selfish and wants to be in limelight forever. Her allegations are totally baseless.

The queen of Indian track and field for two decades, P.T. Usha has been associated with Indian athletics since 1979. 1986 Seoul Asian Games: Usha won golds in the 200 m, 400 m, 400 m hurdles and 4x400m relay. However, she was determined not to be discouraged, and won four golds and two silvers at the Asian Track Federation meet in Delhi, 1989. She was awarded the Arjuna Award in 1983, and the Padma Shree in 1985. You can walk on P.T. Usha Road in Cochin. Her autobiography, Golden Girl, was published by Penguin in 1987. Usha is still the highest positioned Indian athlete in the latest rating list of International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF), Indian Olympic Association's Woman Athlete of the Millennium award (2000), Usha had also been adjudged the best Asian athlete in 1984, '85, '86, '87 and '89. I feel most of us take decisions based on emotions and not on actual facts. PT Usha had gone there not as an invitee but to promote her students. If we accept the policy of providing preferential treatment to ex celebrities there is no room left for our present generation. Just to be simple , if any of the famous ex cricketer goes to any cricket match to promote his students or to watch with his family/ friends can we accept special reception at the airport and special accommodation in Hotels at the cost of others???.

WE are accepting too much which cannot be delivered with the limited resources allocated. Moral of the story is make your own arrangements to improve your financial situation when the sun shines. Don't depend on State or public funds for your future needs . Same thing happened to SRK recently when he visited USA.We should change our Imperialistic mind set which is still there in our blood. Having said this PT Usha Is the greatest Athelete there is no doubt about it.

The association must apologise for not providing separate accommodation to PT Usha. But there was no need for PT Usha to go to the press and make it a big issue. People from her state live such a miserely life in the Gulf even though they earn fat salaries.

I know of a person from PT Usha's state, who is living in the Gulf, and who has been provided a 3 bedroom apartment from his company for his family. This guy has rented out all the 3 bedrooms to outsiders, and he lives in the living room with his family and 3 kids. That is the story of the people from her state. I agree that all people are not the same.

So what a big deal" which kid are u talkin abt???? "I hate cricket the most dum sport I have seen in my life" u call it dumb and I guess its the most popular sport in india, tell me wats so dumb abt it, is it easy to be on the field continoulsy for 5 days, do u know how much stamina one needs, a cricketer may not be able to sprint as fast as PT USHA, but still don under estimate any cricketers.

A cricketer gets all the admiration and adulation because its very popular, dont blame cricketers for that, they never proclaim not to give importance to other sports, they are just doing their job, thats it, "Just run on track the way PT Usha had run in her timing and proof that you are a man", Mr. Ronald is that the only way I could prove that I am a Man, there are much better ways to do that, I dont want a person sitting in Kuwait telling me If i am a Man or not.

Bhopal- the name of your city is being spoilt by these sycopants who "run" behind Ministers and officials at "sports meets". So athletes have to stay 5/6 in a room and are expected to give their best Mr Gill as the Sports Minister you want to travel by business class, you want 5 star luxury accomodation, you want half a dozen security personnel with you- just because you have been asked to "open a meet".

Mrs S Gandhi should stop this get the local sports chiefs to open all meets all over India and the country will save money and use it for the athletes, their trainers and their official representatives. Make it compulsory that all official representatives are given single accomodation in 3 star equivalent hotels and athletes get 2 in a room accomodation with proper food and facilities.

We are showcasing as in the case of PT Usha that we are a third rate country. MP Govt officials involved should immediately be transferred to some remote place as a punishment. Daiji keep after this news followup for ex sportmens sake.

Having spent years with Indian Sports Authority, PT Usha should have known what to expect. Beaurcratice structures such as SAI would never bother to extend a hand to someone like PT Usha (who is a non-entity of today, despite being a star of yester years!) at the cost of inflating the ego of politicians and Govt utives. I saw the news clip. It was gut wrenching to see PT Usha reduced to bits and peices. It was disgustong to see a, sharply dressed ranked Govt sports official carelessly dismissing it as a 'communication gap' and refusing to look into the matter. This official would hardly fathom the effort, sacrifices and mental stamina exuded by this lady to reach the heights she did despite the hostile conditions at every turn.
