Udupi, Dec 28: A one-day outing was recently scheduled for the LKG and UKG children of Nirmala English Medium School to Manipal.
The school van with a total of 40 students, 17 boys and 23 girls along with 9 staff members left the school at 9.15 am.
The etymology of the word picnic was originally a 17th-century French word, picque-nique which is based on the verb piquer, which means ‘pick’, ‘peck’, or ‘nab’, and the rhyming addition nique, which means ‘thing of little importance’, ‘bagatelle’, ‘trifle’. It means an excursion or outing with food usually provided by members of the group and eaten in the open place. It is an event to take a break, enjoy the warm sunshine, visit the historical and wonderful places closeby and have fun in free time. It is usually held in a park or other open places around, which have historical relevance.
On the way to Manipal, the students visited the 'Our Lady of Fathima Church' in Parampalli, Udupi. The children marvelled at the fine art of the historical monument which was recently built. They enjoyed the multi-structure there and saw the church and its surrounding. They next visited the Ganesh temple. Students took a break for milk and snacks at Manipal lake. This place is well developed and has maintained a good place to chill out with family and friends. There is an open-air theatre too. It has many entrances; a paved pathway is also available around the lake.
From there they went to Salumarada Thimmakka Tree Park which is a very nice tree park with trails around it, a small children’s play area, a medicinal herbarium and many educational displays. The students relaxed for some time and saw the park as well as the models kept over there and read the description written on the trees.
After lunch, a few games and storytelling with actions, wearing a mask of the animals, dancing to a song, action songs, were conducted for the students by the teachers. At 3.15 pm the happy picnickers boarded the bus to return home after the ice-cream. They reached the school at 4.00 pm.
It was a day of complete of fun and joy.
