Dharwad, Dec 15: Cases of rape and sexual harassment against women have increased drastically in the country. People everywhere have been expressing their rage against these inhumane acts. The Nirbhaya and Disha cases have sent shockwaves throughout the country. The citizens of the country are demanding the hanging of rapists. But the irony is that the country has shortage of hangmen to carry out death sentences.
In the midst of all this, a man from Dharwad has attracted the attention of people by applying for the position of hangman.
Shaukath, a resident of Navalangunda town of the district had applied for the post of hangman way back in 2013. He had appealed to the government to permit him to carry out the death sentence that was awarded to the convicts. Shaukath, who came to know that there was no hangman in Karnataka, had applied to the prison officials of government of Karnataka to appoint him for the position.
Shaukath, who exudes patriotic spirit, says, "Every one wants to be a doctor or engineer. But I have applied for the position of hangman in order to serve my country. I have known all the aspects of this job. If the government gives me the post, I will carry out the same pefectly."
Shaukath runs a small hotel at Navalagunda. He says, "There are many convicts who are sentenced to death in various jails in the country. But their sentence is not carried out as there are no hangmen. If I get an opportunity, I will do this job. I have even travelled to Bengaluru and Delhi in connection with this job."
