Bangladeshi refugees in Raichur ecstatic over Citizenship Act amendment

Bengaluru, Dec 14 (IANS): Bangladeshi refugees living in Sindhanur Taluk in Raichur district in Karnataka have been celebrating the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), which will pave the way for them to obtain Indian citizenship.

"As many as 4,000 Bangladeshi refugees are living in Sindhanur. They are celebrating the passing of the CAA," Raichur Superintendent of Police C.B. Vedamurthy told IANS.

The Hindu refugees in Sindhanur played with colours and burst crackers near a Durga temple in the Bangla camp.

Though many people across the country have voiced their opposition to CAA, the stateless refugees were overjoyed at its enactment.

However, Vedamurthy confirmed that the police have not yet received any order from the government to mainstream the refugees.

In the Sindhanur refugee camp, some Bangladeshi families have seen their third generation being raised. Over the decades, several families inter-married among themselves within the camp.

Many of the refugees in the camp fled East Pakistan or Bangladesh before the 1971 war or soon after it began.

The refugees hailed from places like Faridpur, Barisal, Dhaka, Jessore and Khulna in Bangladesh.

The temporary shelters allotted to the refugees at that time later turned into permanent refugee camps.

The Bill amends the Citizenship Act of 1955 to give eligibility for Indian citizenship to illegal migrants who are Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan, and who entered India on or before 31 December 2014. The bill does not include Muslims.[36][37] Immediate beneficiaries of the Bill, according to IB records, will be just over 30,000 people.[38] India's previous citizenship law, Citizenship Act 1955, did not consider religious affiliation to be a criterion for eligibility.[39]

Under the Act, one of the requirements for citizenship by naturalization is that the applicant must have resided in India during the last 12 months, and for 11 of the previous 14 years. The Bill relaxes this 11-year requirement to five years for persons belonging to the same six religions and three countries. The bill exempts the tribal areas of Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Tripura, included in the Sixth Schedule to the Constitution from its applicability. These tribal areas include Karbi Anglong in Assam, Garo Hills in Meghalaya, Chakma district in Mizoram, and Tribal Areas district in Tripura. It also exempted the areas regulated through the Inner Line Permit which includes Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram and Nagaland.[40][41][24][42] The inclusion of Manipur in Inner Line Permit was also announced on 9 December 2019[20] and notified on 11 December 2019[43] by amending Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation, 1873.

what Congress wont tell about NRC...Even after the end of Bangladesh civil war migration continued, though illegally. The Government of India(Congress) in 1950 introduced the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act, 1950. which mandated expulsion of illegal immigrants from the state of Assam...In the year 1965, the government of India took up with the government of Assam to expedite completion of the National Register of Citizens..but process lingered for decades...then two NGOs of Assam went to SC to speed up the process. knowing central govt, state govt not doing enough SC itself took the matters in hand and appointed NRC officers , impelemntd NRC & contuining monitor of NRC..but as usual for Congress, now NRC is devils act, Aadhar/GST also devil act eventhough Congress conceived it but now thru propaganda conceals it...its same with TTL also..

For the state of Assam, with the help of 54000 employees, it took 3 years to prepare NRC at the cost of Rs.1600/- crores. Population of Assam is just about 3 crores.
As per CAA, on the basis of NRC and newly enacted CAA, all illegal migrants of based on their religious affiliation, who entered India before 2014 would be given Indian Citizenship.
Assam and North Eastern states refuse to accept CAA, citing that due to CAA, there will be more influx of people from Bangladesh! Which states will host them?
Courts held that having their names appearing on Electoral Rolls and Passports is a record of Indian citizenship.
To those living in India without any identity, how will the Govt term them as other nationals? and drive them out?
That too, if that nation also don't accept them? Is a big question mark!

you have got it all mixed up.
Northeast opposes- they dont want bengali hindus.
NRC has no relation with CAA.
CAA is a law specifically for hindus.christians and other minorities from three muslim countries.
NRC is a process-which has not even been initiated until now.

dont confuse people, if you do not know it yourself.

    Read the Bill.

    Mahesh,
N.E. People have been fighting for expulsion of all illegal migrants for more than 6 decades, irrespective of their religious affiliation! They have rights for these are from other countries!
Do you know, Maharashtrians opposing influx of people from UP, Bihar.
Kannadigas opposing influx from T. N. Though they are from same country and legally allowed!
I know, NRC and CAA is different; but our union H.M. has claimed that NRC will be carried out in all states.
You tell me, without NRC, how will the illegal migrants be detained? In Assam, it's due to NRC they got the figure of illegal immigrants!

Most of the Pakistani Christians live in Metro cities of Karachi and Lahore where there's usually cosmopolitan culture and and less bigotry.
I'm sure you are not aware or bother to read about what Hindus,Sikhs and Christians in Interior regions of Sindh and Punjab are going through.
After all, Islam was spread in Indian subcontinent with Convert or Sword Policy since 712 A.D.
    Nobody can deny this.

GCC Countries even don't give citizenship to Muslims as well. Every single person irrespective of their religion are safe in GCC. No one asked any Non Muslim to follow Islam or never hurt their religious sentiments or never judged anyone based on their religion. you ask your friends or relatives who are working in GCC. All are happy and safe.

CAA is about the religiuos minorities who have already come here.
Hindus and christians of those three countries.
Previuosly it was 11 years of stay in india to get citizenship. CAA reduced it to 5 years to apply.

Muslims can apply through normal channel.
Adnan sami got indian passport that way.
