Mangaluru, Dec 12: In connection with a theft which took place about two and half months back in the city, the Kadri police succeeded in arresting another accused on the night of Tuesday December 10. The arrested accused happens to be Rajendra Pawar (35) from the city. He faces the charge of purchasing stolen gold ornaments.
Gold ornaments worth about Rs 35 lac and cash amounting to Rs 65,000 had been stolen from a flat belonging to Anita N Shetty located in Abhiman Texas Apartment near SCS Hospital on Balmatta-Bendore Road. Pawar reportedly bought the gold ornaments from the thieves.
The police said that Pawar happens to be an accused in a case relating to Hawala transactions registered in Bunder police station here in the past. With this arrest, the number of arrested people connected with theft has risen to eight. Seven persons were arrested on December 5, and all of them are in judicial custody. Another accused is yet to be arrested, it is learnt.
Accused, Rakesh Boniface D'Souza, Ashok Pandrekar, Ganesh Bapu Parab, Shahir Muhammed, Janardhana Acharya, Chandan Acharya and Purushotham Acharya were arrested relating to this theft on December 5.
The police got tip off that Rajendra Pawar was moving in an auto rickshaw in the city along with his friend from Bengaluru, Babu. Anti-Rowdy Squad of central sub-division and Kadri police located the auto rickshaw and stopped it near Besant Junction. It is said that Babu posed questions to the police who were trying to arrest Rajndra about their motive, tried to assault them, and obstructed them from discharging their duty. It is said that even during the inquest, Babu created hurdles for the policemen doing their duties. Therefore, the police arrested him and handed over to judicial custody. The police said that Babu happens to be an office bearer of Jewellers Association Bengaluru.
