Bagalkot: Onions turn into a 'gifting option' as prices touch sky

Daijiworld Media Network – Bagalkote (EP)

Bagalkot, Dec 7: A video of a bride and groom being gifted a box of onions on their wedding day has gone viral on social media.

While the gesture by the friends of the newly-wed was intended to create an atmosphere of laughter, the soaring onion prices have left consumers in tears.

In India, onion is in huge demand as it’s a part of many Indian recipes. Onion is being sold in most places at rates between Rs 170 to Rs 200. Though it is imported from other countries, its price has not come down. Imported onion is being sold along with local onions in large amounts.

Reports are also emerging regarding onions being stolen.

In the current situation, onion has taken centre place in the market in the county. It has recorded highest price for the first time. It is breaking its own records price wise and creating new records.

Which govt. could control onion prices? During Dr. M. Singh's govt. in 2013, when Mr. Kapil Sibal was asked the question of rising prices of onion (then Rs. 100/kg), he replied, "ask the merchants to control the price. Govt. is not selling onions." This was his reply. Now when asked the same question to him he says ask the finance minister to control. This video has become viral in whatsapp. Simply put the blame on others. Only we people have to bear the brunt. These politicians are least affected, be it govt or opposition.

Onion is the staple bulb, used for cooking all Indian delicacies..... This scarcity of this precious vegetable, is clearly manipulated, by cunning, dubious politicians, who want to make a fortune, by creating a huge scarcity, in the consumer market !!!!! Shocking and extremely disgusting, to observe senior ministers, ridiculous discourse, of not eating this onion bulb and garlic, because of their arrogance, haughtiness..... claiming superiority, of their caste, over other citizens !!!!!!
