Bengaluru: No respite in sight - Onion price continues to soar, reaches Rs 200 mark

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Dec 7: Severe shortfall in supply has pushed onion price skyward. The vegetable has reached Rs 200 a kg mark in the state, which is beyond the reach for common citizens.

Onion price hovered around Rs 200 per kg in wholesale markets all over the state including Yashwanthpur here and Hubballi. The state government has been conducting raids on wholesale dealers who it suspects are hoarding this much sought-after vegetable. It is said that the raids so far conducted exceeded 150 as on Friday.

Sources in the market as well in the government expect the prices to somewhat come down by January and not before. Onion and Potato Traders Association secretary here, C Uday Shankar, said that the onion price per kilogram touched Rs 180 on Friday. He said inclusive of Agricultural Produce Market Committee charges and taxes, the commodity price will touch Rs 200 mark easily. He confessed that the supply of onion has reduced to just about 25 to 30 percent of the current demand.

In Hubballi also, which is considered to a major market, onion price has been racing towards Rs 200 per kg mark on account of shortfall in supply that has been around 60 percent. With the passage of each week since the last over a month, the gap between the demand and supply positions is broadening, thus contributing to the spiraling of the onion prices.

State chief secretary, T M Vijay Bhaskar, said that the government is keeping a close watch on the situation and has been taking action against illegal hoarders through raids under instructions from the central government. The officials have been raiding major markets too check inflow, outflow and stock of onion.

It is learnt that the central government has pegged the stock of onion a wholesaler can have at 25 tonnes whereas retailers can keep five tonnes maximum. The officials said that so far no hoarding was observed during their 150 odd raids.

Only Maharashtra is ahead of Karnataka in onion cultivation in the country but because of floods, onion crop was ruined this time. The state has been trying to get maximum possible allocation of onions that are being imported from other countries.

It is gathered that India will get the onion stock of 17,000 tonnes it has ordered from Turkey and Egypt during the third week of December and therefore, the officials feel that the prices may ease after first week of January 2020.

    Cynthi,

You should take a lead in 'Neerulli Satuagraha' in line with Gandhiji's 'Uppina Satyagraha' in 1942....

March could start from Kirem to Belman...I am planning to take a 'holy dip' in Sankalakariya river en route to Belman....

When Satyagrahi's reach Belman....'Neerulli Baje' could be prepared and distributed to the People...Shankar is required to attend...No Chicken Curry only Neerulli Baje and Sambar / Sorpotel allowed...

Beef is not allowed...hence Sir J is not invited...

    ...Tak...Takk...

Lan.... Sir, ...wowwwwww....fantastic ideas flashing in your wonderful brain... You said and I have begun the march from Kirem in your absence... because onions are required more urgently for chicken thadka.... Sankalkariya river has started drying up now dear. Last week I had been to belman santhe... Not much water....you can take holy dips no danger... Let's cancel sorpotel please... .. Garlic has become costly too.... main ingredient of sorpotel too has become costly.....neerulli pakoda and chai is more than sufficient for the time being.... 😋😋

Thats why, Beef never stopped giving Forex revenue, and Ms. Sitaram kept assuring the Imported onions will reach in Jan 2020, by when new crop will be ready for harvest ! This time, Madam must taste and see how delicious onions are; because the imported lot will be too much for common man to afford.

I firmly believe, that the acute shortage of Onions, are purely a man made tragedy, created by influential traders, middlemen, who at the behest of our politicians, have deliberately created this fiasco, year after year, just to loot, scoot, laugh away to the bank, while the consumers weep and mourn !!!!!!!!

Rs. 200/- or 500/- who cares ?? Nirmala Sitaram doesn't eat onions !!

Studying the weather pattern, the government should have warned the farmers to move the product to godowns. Or, should have made arrangements in advance to import it.

No problems - majority are voters of BJP - they are enjoying the price rise because they think it's benefiting the farmer as if the onion is 'Khul jaa sim-sim' that comes out of a farmer's field as much as he rubs the magic wand !

Actually Govt intended to Import Onions Long back
But NCP and Congress in Maharashtra did a massive Campaign against Modi Govt telling Govt doesnt want to Farmers get more and more price for Onions,Instead want to help Urban consumers get cheap prices so importing .Probably for this reason Govt didnt make huge imports .I had been to Nashik even there price is above Rs 100 Farmers lost crops yes But my freinds there got huge money for whatever onions they grew there .Which was just Rs 8 or 10 per Kg before

Let farmers sell their produce in the markets directly to the customers, let them make money not the middlemen. Government should make such arrangements. Not elections after elections, Sadly nobody cares about farmers, only during elections all the parties remember the farmers.

If there is shortage in supply, Onion should not be available at stores, but go anywhere Onion is available a plenty but only the price is more. Stockists are making artificial shortage & instill fear factor amoung the retailers to make money by looting people & the government is not doing anything which is not acceptable at all. Those who loot people & make money, will be looted by someone else & retail chain of loot continues. Do business with standards not by looting people.
A daily wage worker cannot afford to buy Onions at all at the present rate.

    Cynthy bai,
You always give onion thadka to chicken curry when Onion is cheap and chicken is costly. Now the costs are other way around, I too cooked other way around.
Jokes aside, I remember how the opposition elevated the issue of onion prices with street demonstrations across the nation during MMS time. Now except on twitter, there is no protests. Present opposition is protesting only against the removal of SPG cover. Onion prices which affect the common man is no issue for them at all.

70 years period is from 1947 to 2017. This period includes BJP rule under Mr Vajpayee and Mr Modi also. You may say it is short period. But how rain of few minutes can wet the clothes which took one whole day to dry, similarly misrule of short period can ruin the economy painstakingly built during the rule of majority period.

We studied that the light, that reaches the earth, is measured by 'light years' (the time it takes to reach the earth). I wonder if Jeevan is a scientist. As per his findings, the rain takes 70 years to reach the farmers' fields. Therefore, that what has been happening since 70 years (beginning 1947) is yielding today.

I wonder, what will be the result of six years from 2084 (result of Modi rule) - he he he...
