Udupi, Dec 2: “John Monteiro, who was employed as an AC technician in Saudi Arabia, was arrested for an unknown reason and later declared dead. Monteiro suffered health issues while under custody and was not given any care when he requested for it, causing his death,” alleged his family members.
Addressing media at Udupi press club, Dr Ravindranath Shanbhag, president, Human Rights Protection Foundation, Udupi, said, “Reportedly, the family of the deceased received a phone call from an unknown Saudi number who informed them regarding Monteiro's condition. The victim's family raised alarm when they heard the news and sought help in this regard from the Ministry of External Affairs. Unfortunately, their efforts were in vain when they failed to receive any help from the Centre. As per sources, the family was asked to retrieve the body of the victim by paying a certain sum. Given the poor financial state of the family, retrieving the body was a herculean task.

“Meanwhile, the Human Rights Protection Foundation in Udupi worked tirelessly and helped in bringing back Monteiro's body.
“The family questioned the absence of medical insurance and a work permit, two of the most important documents while residing in a foreign nation.
“Although the family is keen on fighting a case in Saudi Arabia against the miscarriage of justice, they require at least USD 15,000 for the same,” he said.
